Honda MTF change

What year?

Most Honda MT's for civys require a 75W85 fluid with a viscosity@100C of about 11.3 cSt such as our MTL-P.

The OEM Honda MTF fluid is good, but for a little more money you can get a MUCH better fluid like...

Specialty Formulations MTL-P
Amsoil MTF
Redline MTL

The Redline MTL made the 5 speed in my 01 Civic noisy (or at least that's what seemed to cause the increased noise). Going back to Honda MTL made the tranny inaudible again. I'd like to try that SF MTL-P though... i'll be ordering some up for my next change.

I think the Redline MTL used to be the go to fluid in the past, so there should be quite a few folks with good input.

There just wasn't much choice until BiTOG came along!

while 10w30 or 10w40 may seem a lot thinner than a 75w85 or 80w90 gear oil, it is not. gear oil and motor oil are on different weight ratings. here is a chart that shows what i mean.

Viscosity Chart

Manual transmission fluids usually come in at the lower viscosity ranges while differential lubes come in at the higher viscosity or weight ranges.

I just replaced the manual trans fluid in my 2001 Integra with an 80/20 mix of MTL and MT-90. Hasn't been in there very long yet but seems nice and smooth so far. I've had the car for about a year now and I suspect the dealer (Acura dealer) changed the fluid because it came out clean when I drained it. However, my transmission had become notchy and hard to shift into gear at times. I'm sure the dealer put Honda MTF in there but I don't know for sure. Anyway, the Redline mix seems much better right now.

in regards to how difficult it is to change the fluid, id assume it is somewhat similar to my 03 civic 5spd. all you do is drain the fluid from one hole, replace the plug. remove the top filler plug, get a long piece of tubing, about 3ft or so, attach a funnel to the top, and just pour the new fluid in until the fill hole begins to overflow. which in my car is around 1.8qt's.

its a honda. im doubtfull if there is a better fluid than genuine honda manual transmission fluid. i doubt honda actually makes the stuff but im sure they require the manf to formulate it to perform very well in a honda trans. besides, its boatloads cheaper than those expensive oils.

will other oils work? sure. will other oils work as well? maybe, probably.

but why not stick with something that you KNOW works well, the genuine honda fluid.

please understand i dont mean to knock the other brands out there, its just that you cant go wrong with honda oem fluid.
