Honda MTF change

SXG6 - I do the fill plug first since I
can't drain if I can't refill MTF. I think Honda and Acura manual trannies are easier than most other cars and almost make up for their worst oil filter location.

The older Honda's used motor oil, the newer ones use a manual transmission fluid with different additives. The newer ones also caution that if you use to motor oil to change it as soon as you can. So, as usual, check the manual or ask the dealer what your model requires.

I have a 1998 Civic, and am running Specialty Formulations MTL-P. I am quite pleased with it.

My older 1990 used motor oil, never did anything special with that one.

You can also use the vent tube at the top of the trans.....and forget about the fill hole.

Look at the UOA of Honda MTF and you will see that it shears down BIG TIME within 30K miles.

I had my Accord in to get some service and I asked about the Honda MTF and the what the Honda Mechanic recommended for change intervals, and he said, don't go over 30k. I wonder if its because of the sheering...

just changed mine yesterday, drained the mobile drive clean out, looked amber colored as it streamed out but the bucket showed otherwise... pretty dark and it shimmered like glitter in the sun....probably not good...

threw in havoline 10w30 and about half a bottle of VSOT....shifts a bit smoother

Try maxlife 10-30 on sale/rebate for free Ponti.
What you can't use in the engine of the 5 qt
WM jug you can use in your trannie and would be pretty close to your havo/vsot fill.

If it shimmered like glitter then thats because the PCMO does not contain EP adds (nor does it contain the right friction modifiers) and you maybe grinding up your synchros and gear teeth little by little.

Too much VSOT could actually cause pitting in a diffy, just as too much VSOT can cause pitting on cam tappets.

Your Honda requires an MT specific fluid of 11.3 cSt viscosity with the proper friction modifiers for good synchro engagement and EP protection.

Our MTL-P is speced for that tranny.
