Honda K24 timing chain?

In my thread about my CRV and it’s defective exhaust camshaft, @The Critic indicated that at its miles, it probably needs a timing chain. Does that apply to all K24’s? I see a cheapo 2005 crv on CL and as much as I don’t want another one, it sorta meets the current needs.

Our 2003 Honda Element with the K24 motor with 286,000 miles on the odometer still has a perfectly fine timing chain. It shows no observable wear or slack at all and we are the original owners. Consistent 5,000 mile oil changes throughout its lifespan using SOPUS 5W-20 full synthetic oils and premium filters (e.g., Fram Ultra XG7317, Bosch 3323, NAPA Platinum 47356). I plan to take it to >500,000 miles unless it gets totaled in an accident.

The later ones of the K24 had a spring in the hydraulic (engine oil) variable cam, that is too weak. There are youtube videos of an easy way replace that spring, and on the website honda crv owners club forum there are threads/post about what spring to use.

Very recent k24 engines had a problem with the timing chain tensioner. 2 race car engine parts companies make a better tensioner to use as an upgrade replacement.

What is early and what is late? guess I will have to do some reading on that, although it doesn’t sound like a big problem.

It depends on the years and the maintenance done, I know of some low mile 2010 and 11 that needed the whole timing set and vvt actuator replaced, they likely had very long oci as well as occasional low oil levels etc. Of the 3rd gen CRV's the 10 and 11, ended up with the revised junk actuators that do the rattle, they say it doesn't hurt anything, but could impart some sort of unwanted frequency into the chain system.

I think if it’s been taken care of, chain stretch on a k24 is not an issue. It’s when they burn oil and aren’t kept topped off, or get sludged up…anything to reduce oil pressure to the chain tensioner in turn causing abnormal chain stretch.

Mine went out of time a little over 200k I think? Could be remembering wrong, maybe high 100s, but it stretched enough that timing went out / engine light for cam crank timing correlation whatever it was. I pulled the tensioner cover and noticed it very fully protruding (taking up as much slack in chain as it could) then verified it with valve cover off and crank at zero just to be sure.

My car was bought at 100k and I could never drain the oil and it look clean. Didn’t matter if it was a 500mile oil change or a 3k mile oil change, it was always black. Questionable service before I bought it, but it was still a great car.

Regular OCIs for the win!
Our 2006 TSX has had a steady diet of M1 at 5K max intervals since day 1. I never check the oil. 225K. I love this car. Just got new booties, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. Great rubber; this thing runs perfectly. Even has a new backup camera.
It is on its 3rd water pump... And that sucker is a tight fit in the European Accord TSX model.
