Not sure what Honda is expereinceing on the 9spd ZF, but Jeep had the snap ring issue( that one is on ZF) and software update to improve the shifting.
from Jeep boards they have pretty much solved the problems, mid2014 got the new snap ring design and and the new firmware has pretty much eliminated any of the other complaints.
I drove a rental 2015 Cherokee and I thought it was a great transmission, couldnt tell it was shifting and got over 31 mpg in some around town and highway driving in a 4wd. That is good IMHO, also I have the ZF 8spd in my Overland and that thing rocks behind the hemi! Best trans I have ever driven.
CVT's I wouldnt waste my time, throw away transmissions.
