Honda 2.4 Ticking Noise - Running Thread

Honda valvetrains have always been on the noisy side. My B18C's was pretty loud, even right after a valve adjustment and on various oils (OEM Honda oil, Mobil 1, etc).

yes, its just a single tick..sounds like 1 valve or something isnt getting oil for 5 seconds and then once the oil makes it there it goes away.

I had a ticking sound on start up on occasion. Once the engine was warm, it wasn't noticeable. I'm not sure what caused it. Seemed to come and go at different times. I'd throw a bottle of Regane HM Fuel System cleaner just to see if that changes anything.

It could be whoever did the vale adjustment last time didn't do it quite right. Has it just recently started to make this sound?

The 2.4's are bulletproof engines.

Try an oil that is known to quiet down noisy valve trains...
PYB/Quaker State Ultimate Durability and a high quality filter such as Honda OEM, PureONE, Bosch D+, etc...
After that, you've done just about all you can.
Look, you obviously take very good care of this car, but some noises and quirks are just inherent in some designs and manufacturing. Driving yourself crazy over some valve train noise just isn't gonna get you anywhere. Its also Possible there could be a hole or passage plugged somewhere, Auto-Rx/Kreen/SeaFoam/MMO could be a try for that.
Once you've got all that down and over with, then you go from there.

Edit: An injector malfunctioning could make a distinctively similar noise.

I think its had this intermittent ticking for as long as i can remember, guess i just started noticing it more lately. I think Ill just continue using Pennzoil Ultra or PP and Honda OEM filter. Before I change the oil out this next time Ill throw in a good dose of Techron in the gas tank and see what happens. Im also doing a used oil analysis on my current fill (Pennzoil Ultra 5w20 Honda OEM A01)

Maybe you paid to have a valve adjustment done but it wasn't really done or not done properly. Japanese vehicles generally have mechanical valve follower instead of hydraulic, and are prone to valve ticking noise especially until warmed up. A little clearance and ticking doesn't usually increase engine wear.

But who knows it could be the timing chain ticking until the tensioner gets oil pressure. if it goes away quickly, I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe try a heavier weight oil. What do you use now?

It only gets 5w20, would a 0w20 be worth considering? or would that make things worse? Thicker would be slower getting to engine parts. So I wont go thicker.

Thicker oil is slower to drain off. And where the oil is pressured lubed and at warm ambient temperatures (FL year around) a heavier grade oil is going to get there just as fast and build higher pressure. Don't knock it till you tried it lol.

Owned an Accord with the 2.4L K24. IIRC valve adjustments were not even called for in the maintainance routine. I thought it did not have solid lifters.

Space in between parts causes noise. Thicker oil takes up space.

oh, why not put some cotton buds to quiet it down further? [just joking]

oil flowing up to the head is important,

That's right I forgot, 5w30 flows like maple syrup.

I agree that it's likely something in the cam phasing system. A short duration tick like this is very likely not a filter or oil or valvetrain clearance issue. Toyota/Scion had a very similar issue with the 2AZ engines and it was something with the cam phaser device on the snout of the camshaft.
