So even after changing my oil and putting on the Fram Ultra i still got a random valve tick today. Its only happened once since changing the oil. It seems to happen in my work parking lot after the car has sat for 4 hours after driving it. Its a single tick that lasts about 5 seconds then goes away...Is that normal operation? again only happens about 4 hours after the car has been driven and only happens once in a blue moon. why would it do this? normal?

I would use a quick engine flush such as Amsoil Engine Flush or BG 109 (available at most dealerships or go to bg prod.com....find a shop!!!)

There has been research that shows ethanol is causing buildup in that engine area. The flush helps sticking parts but doesn't hurt anything else. It also increases effectiveness of oils. I have had GREAT results and testimonials from using it

Its normal. Its just oil seeping out of the lifters. Normally a better filter could shut it up, as a better anti-drainback may keep oil in there, but realistically what you're talking about is totally normal and not harmful in any way.

Using an engine flush to fix that is idiotic and won't fix anything. Ethanol also doesn't sludge your lifters. So anyone suggesting such a thing clearly has no idea what hydraulic lifters do.

A rough bunch!

"it only happens once in a blue moon." Like trying to show a service adviser an intermittent problem. You may not get many suggestions for the valve tick noise.

Same in my Grand Cherokee; the lifters bleed down after awhile, and once oil pressure builds and engine temp comes up a bit, it's quiet as it always has been.

Once in a blue moon and 5 ticks isn't anything to worry about IMO.

What he said...

already adjusted

It's not oil seeping out of the lifters; this engine doesn't have lifters, so they aren't a variable here.

Can you better describe the "single tick" you get? It lasts for 5 seconds? Does it sound like a rattle or a buzz or a clatter...how would you describe it? It may be something like a loose timing chain tensioner, a cam phaser that has some play in it, or a faulty ADBV in the filter.

A valve adjustment would be a good idea if it hasn't been done yet, but I doubt that it's the source of your intermittent tick. I think you'd hear improper valve lash as a more consistent noise. Also: some oils just seem to be louder in these engines than other oils. Many people have reported that these Honda K24s run pretty darn quiet on Mobil 1 0W-20. I have Mobil 1 0w30 in mine right now, and will go back to 0W-20 on the next change. The 0w30 is also very very quiet in this engine.

It comes down to the filter I think. My Cherokee sits for 2 or 3 weeks a time sometimes and the engine is as quiet as can be. The EVAP purge solenoid ... well that makes it sound like it's going to toss a rod at any minute.

I think he mentioned the problem before and after changing filter brands. The ultra he's using now has metal end caps and a silicone (not Nitrile) ADBV, the same setup as the MC filters which are well known for ADB ability. But... the ultra is high efficiency. If the former was high efficiency too, that could be a clue about the oil pump strength. I remember something about honda I4's, oil pumps and oil pressure, maybe somebody with more knowledge can comment.

RiceCake Can you tell me where the Honda K24 has lifters in it?

OP= I would try Mobil 1 0w30 or Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 With a WIX filter

i think I would go with an oem style filter and some 0w-20 or 5w-20 quality synthetic oil. see if the problem is still there.

its just a single tick tick tick tick tick, it lasts about 5 seconds. It sounds like a single valve isnt getting oil then once the oil gets there, no more noise. as long as its not damaging then im fine with it

My Pontiac does that a little, but after a few seconds its the quietest engine I've ever owned. I've had engines that like it a little thicker at startup for whatever reason. They were actually quieter. Its a balance of flow versus film sometimes that defies the theoretical rhetoric commonly posted here.

It may be a touch of piston slap (these engines are known for that). This type of noise is significantly reduced in my engine with Mobil 1 0W-20/30. No other oil has been as quiet in mine as the Mobil 1 twins. Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 was also pretty dang quiet. Pennzoil synthetics would rattle for miles. I don't know what it is about different oils (I still suspect concentration/type of moly).

Seriously, it still probably just the oil draining out of your horizontally mounted oil filter. Not sure why the K-series engines still have the oil filter halfway up the block mounted sideways like this was 1989, but regardless of ADBV style in this config oil will always drain out. The ticking is just a dry valvetrain/dry cylinder walls. There are no hydraulic lifters in this engine, (again like this was 1989), but they still click clack, esp without full oil flow

I never said it would fix it but using a mild flush has helped. I've seen it first hand working in a shop. And I have seen tests showing ethanol can cause problems. I've seen it first hand!!

well that does not make since...it doent clack or tick after sitting all night, just after its been warmed up and sat a couple hours, then it ticks. starts up nice a quiet in the morning
