Progressive Metal band Symphony X has a song called The Odyssey
Sadly like trigonometry, German language and many other topics in High School, I was just ferrting the air through the hollow cranial core. If I knew then, what I know now. Youth is wasted on the young - I wish I had really paid attention.
Of course this was required in High School back then. I do remember that, and hunks and pieces.

A little controversy regarding the actor selection in the latest movie. Not a fan of Matt Damon in this role, that's not how I imagined Odysseus.
The movie Troy cast both Odysseus and Achilles well, actually most of the characters. However, the movie kind of butchered the story, shortening the war to a few months instead of ten years. To understand the Illiad and the Trojan War better, read Whom the Gods Would Destroy by Richard Powell. I have not seen Odyssey yet, but probably will in the next few days.
Most of the written accounts of the Trojan War have been lost to history. You can blame Julius Caesar for part of that when he somewhat carelessly caused part of the Museum* to be burned in 48 BC while burning the Egyptian fleet. The Illiad is a small part of the story.

I wasn't overly familiar with the original story but the movie was a major let down for me. The ships, armor, clothing.. nothing close to historical accuracy. Viking ships in 1200 BC Greece? Apparently, they changed Oydsseus considerably from the original work as well.
Casting choices were as authentic as the armor design. Acting was all over the place from bad to very good. Robert Pattinson was the easy standout.
And there is quite the feminist tirade tossed in toward the end for ... Modern Audiences.

I think I can handle the classic Greek hoplite weapons and armor in place of Mycenaean armor better some other aspects of film presentations of Homer.
Assigned reading in high school to be sure.
I found the renderings of Homer's work we read to be stirring as I recall. Later took a college elective covering Greek classics. Enjoyable and an easy A.
We may just have to go and see this movie.

Ruined it.
This has ruined Brit detective shows for the most part as well.
Of course happens in many shows, there is a hilarious scene in The Agency S2 E2 or E3. Some crazed guy has gone rogue, and being a "far right extremist" of course quite dangerous............. an agency "spy" and his F AA handler are driving to the location........this east coast guy says the crazy guy won't like her type, she lays into the spy. The writer must know audiences tire of the "far right extremist" gig.

The ships used in this movie are Viking longships. That makes it a no go for me.

they need anywhere between 625 to 750 Millions to just break even. they are at 327 Millions and tonight is the seventh day of representations. if it does not perform well this next Weekend, they are toast. it is the most hyped film i have ever seen in my life.

Somehow I got through school without ever encountering the classics. I think I really missed out.
I read that voluntarily back in Grade 11. My buddy Brian, in a different English class, had to read it. He raved about it, and said it was the first book he'd ever enjoyed.
I read a bunch of Steinbeck voluntarily. Of Mice And Men had really stuck with me.
And of course, To Kill A Mockingbird.
If you wanna try something more recent, and non-fiction, this is one of the most incredible stories you will ever hear...

When I said before I hadn't read the classics, I should have capitalized it, as in Classics, i.e. the ancient Greco-Roman lore.
Me too! Their rendition of the “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” is fantastic. The live version on YouTube is killer also. They also did Alexander the Great. Really good stuff.
