This is my 18.5" 870 sitting on my AK. The AK barrel is about 17" with the flash hider, and the stock is fully collapsed.

The AK handles way better indoors.
 
Yeah. Thinking about it ..it's sorta an equal opportunity event. Depending on the outcome you can defend either of them.

Tough arguments. Personally, I can see and agree with both sides of the coin. I don't own guns, but I'm not anti-gun, either.

My philosophy is as follows:

1. Live in a neighborhood where houses don't get broken into. Dirtbags usually don't travel. Statistically, most robberies are during the day, when people aren't home. Most robbers just want loot, not a slug in the chest.

2. Make your house hard to get into. Heavy steel or wood doors with thick deadbolts, keep windows locked, and install a house alarm. Having a good barking guard dog helps. If the bad guy can't get into your house in the first place, there won't be any need to shoot them.

3. How many wives/kids/friends/random harmless drunks/druggies get shot every year due to mistaken identity as an intruder? Most firearm owners are untrained/half-asleep/panicked when they hear a bump in the night. They grab the piece and dive behind the bed, when the "intruder" walks in they shoot first and ask questions later. Whoops, just shot the wife who was digging in the hall closet for an extra blanket.

Guns are just fine to own, nothing against them. I just feel that most people are way too quick to grab the steel and start firing into the darkness without assessing and analyzing the true threat level.

I would say that this is untrue, considering that the FBI says there are more than 1 million defensive gun uses in the USA per year. That doesn't mean that someone was shot, just that the threat of defensive force with a firearm was used, but it does include the situations where the firearm was actually discharged. If even 2% of the 1 million result in the firearm being discharged, that is 20,000+ per year. We would hear of a heck of a lot more cases of a mistaken identity shooting than we do if "most" of them fired blindly.

I've heard of just as many mistaken identity shootings by police officers as I have by average Joe Citizen. Not to mention that on a per shooting basis, police hit more innocent bystanders than the typical civilian does.
 
I had a weird dream last night that my place got broken into by three thugs. I was alone. I dodged the bullets of one guy and I stabbed him with a screw driver through the eye and killed him. I killed the other guy but with all dreams I don't remember the details. The third thug was laying on the ground holding his stomach. The screwdriver thing stuck in my mind for obvious reasons. I woke me up at 3am amped up. I guess my subconscious is telling me something.

Yes he did.

The bond would have only be set at $500 if they did not return to try to kill me.

No other charges stuck, they can only get him on "attempted vehicle burglery" because they did not actually enter my house, actually fire bullets at me, and did not actually kill me.

Like the cop told me, "Just shoot them, and THEN call us."

Nothing like feeling safe in my own house.

Sad but the officer is correct.

This is the major reason why YOU MUST (even before something like this happens) be in a position to PROTECT your family.

Also ANOTHER REASON why B S laws like a 30 day waiting period (or even a DAY) is just stupid. I'm for background checks and such, but when you need something as IMPORTANT as protection, the time is NOW.

Those bail amounts with a perp with a threat towards the victim in front of a LEO are WAY too low. The lowest I've seen was $5k and the average is $10k.

Anyone can get a $1k bond... When it gets above $5k the bondsman start looking at who/what they did.

I would expect that for someone arrested shoplifting a TV from BestBuy.

If I were you I would definately get a hand gun ASAP and have your wife trained to use it. God forbid you were not home and these thugs showed up, your wife and kids were there.

St. Paul must not have much crime! Here, it is the nice neighborhoods that constantly have nighttime home invasions. There are several every week. I can't wait till someone tries it at my house...

True, for nighttime invastions the bad guys go 4 to a group and play knock knock in the better neighborhoods. Then if some one opens the door, the other 2 come in and the driver stays with the vehicle / look out.

Then in the better neighborhoods we also have daytime burglaries. (since they are at work paying for their nice stuff and taxes)

Not much to gain from the bad areas. The crime that the bad areas get are normally drug deals going bad, users not paying their dealer or gang stuff.

Bad is bad. Its all over.... It will be getting worst.

I used to complain a lot about my neighbors dog (Australian Shepherd) barking at everything that moves. However, there hasn't been any burglaries or home invasions on my street in the 9 years I've been here.

Surprised there isn't more here, I live just off a street that has numerous houses that sell for 500k-1mil. Just a few miles away is a pretty bad neighborhood, would think there would be more robberies.

My all time home security was my two shepherds. One German ..one Belgian. The GS didn't just bark at the door, it wanted out to get you. Both were females. We never locked a door. I wish I had them now. Now I've got a very paranoid and emotionally conflicted Rot-n-Lab and a beagle.

I miss my big dogs. Always had a Shepherd while growing up.
Before I moved here, two big shepherds, one big and smart, one big and crazy, and one cooly calculating Irish Wolfhound.
I never worried about home invasions. Still don't now, even without canids. I'm observant and careful...plus don't own much of anything anybody would care to try and steal!

You would have to have either a crazy person ..or a real desperate one to just do a home invasion into known hostile territory. That would only be sensible if you had known assets of tremendous worth in your home ..or serious enemies.
 
That's really, really unfortunate. Glad you're ok, you should have shot those SOB. Everyone needs to be on guard this holiday season because everyone loosing their jobs and getting desprate, as in your attempted home invasion. I've also heard about theifs stealing wheels off cars and trucks and leaving them on bricks.

Make sure you accompany your wife/families to the malls or anywhere after dark as this will only get worst the closer we get to X-mas.

Don't mean to sound doom and gloom but I hear more and more of this stuff and only see it getting worst.
