Crude oil makes up a very small portion of the cost of motor oil. Refining, transportation, packaging, advertising and wholesale, and retail mark-up an those are not going down

With the notion that consumers are buying less gasoline, oil companies have to keep their preferred stockholders and board members happy, thus making up the fiscal loss in other areas such as increasing OTC oil prices. Fixed costs can rise for companies, but do not account for such a jump in prices.

Good oil/filter deals can still be found, but they are not as prevalent as in years past.

So I grabbed my RP oil and then went over to the conventional racks to grab some for my Sister and I about fainted when I saw the regular prices. Conventional oil running upwards of $6.59 a qt. They must be freakin INSANE! That is what the name brand synthetics were selling for just a year ago.

I know crude is up and I know prices on everything we buy are going to go up over the years but this is just crazy. Make the madness stop. At the rate oil prices are rising it is getting to the point in the not so far off future you will be over $50 to do an OC with conventional oil. Not 2 years back people said if you paid $50 for top end synthetics you were paying too much.


I would try to buy oil at a different place. I can always find name brand conventional oil for 2 to 3 dollars a quart. But it would be hard for me to find Royal Purple less than 9 dollars a quart. Unless I bought it 2 times a year.

It really does not matter on how much gas we purchase. Oil companies will just refine less. Oil companies #1 goal is to make money. If I owned a business this would be my goal also.

For RP at the Auto Parts stores around here the API rated stuff no less. But I forgot I saw some at WM for 7 and some change at WM.

That's why I grab a few cases of chevron when its 9 off at Costco and I bought like 60 quarts on the o Reilly deal. It isn't like it'll go bad in my lifetime.

Yeah,it funny,I know where to get it for $7 a quart,but walking into O'Reilly Autoparts,they think they need to sell it for alil over 9$ a quart.I look at their other prices for their oil,it's ALL OVERPRICED in that store,not sure how they even sell any oil they have in stock.

Walmart will sell what will sell in your area. There is no Nextgen at my local store. Mobil clean cost about a nickel more per quart than supertech here. Motorcraft filers cost about 50 cents more than Purolator classics. For HDEO's there is Rotella, DELO, and Delvac. But for gear lube and transmission fluid there is only supertech fluid. I did find a odd quart of Mobil on ATF once though.

The "regular" prices for conventional oil at auto parts stores are a bit unrealistic. But then, they run promotions and sales all the time. Just grab the current flier and see what's on sale. Usually, the oil+filter bundle that's on sale will beat W-M's regular prices.

Not around here. If I went the Mobil Clean 5qt jug Bosch oil filter route it would be 19.XX before tax. I prefer Motorcaft filters so the price would be a couple dollars less. But as I stated before on here I just do not like to use XOM products just personal bias. So I will use another companies motor oil with a motorcraft filter and it is still less than 20.00 dollars. It is rare for auto parts stores to provide a better price.

Not around this area.The only reason I walk into O'Reilly's anymore is to dump our used oil.

Whenever I walk into an O'Reilly's, Autozone or Pep Boys my butthole puckers just a tad.

$12 for ANCO wipers, $25 for an O2 sensor socket, $15 for a M1 filter. Their bumper paint and trim paint is always $2 to $3 more than a local ACE hardware store...and the oil prices always $2 to $3 more per quart. Obviously O'reilly's business model isn't working because they are all going out of business in the Kitsap Area.

I never go to an Auto Parts store anymore even for things like throttle body cleaner, I can get it cheaper at ACE hardware. I go to them to recycle oil and coolant and NAPA/O'reilly's don't even take them now in my area because they are locally owned and are in cahoots with the local quick lubes. They figure if people can't dump their fluids easily they wont try to DIY.

I won't even pay that for a single quart up here. WM single quarts are very high (approaching that), but parts stores regularly have single quarts for cheaper than that. A wholesale outlet has Mobil Super conventional quarts for around half of the price you posted!

Why would anyone buy the single quarts is beyond me. We all know that buying in bulk is cheaper. A 5qt jug comes out to be cheaper per quart vs individual quarts.

There's a rather simple answer for this question. Stock up while it's cheap!

I personally stocked up with over 300 quarts of various conventional and synthetic oils during Kmart's clearance sales. Got Dino oils like PYB, Valvoline, QSGB for $1 a quart. Got synthetics like M1, Castrol Syntec for $1.50 a quart.

I also take FULL advantage of each and every decent rebate available, esp the FAR deals. I've stocked up on the past and current Valvoline NextGen FAR deals and will be going down to the auto parts stores to get more with this month's deal. Oil changes with a good quality conventional is under $5. $10 at most with a good oil filter.

I don't even look at oil prices when i'm at the auto parts stores / walmart. It just doesn't matter to me. I've got 500,000 miles worth of oil changes for under $10. It's gonna last me YEARS!

Total investment is $300-400.
