The local chain parts stores-Oreillys, Autozone, Pep Boys have all gone hog wild on their oil prices in my area in the last year. I used to get the Moto Semi-Syn 5w20 for $3.79/qt at Oreillys, went back a month ago, $5.99/qt. I laughed, walked out went to Wal-Wart and paid $3.29/qt for singles, $13.90 for a 5qt jug.

They're not quite 50% of the PepBoys price you quoted, but they're close. PYB is something like $3.99/qt.

Well, I will agree with you on that. I'd wager that's why few tend to buy oil at parts retails anymore, at least outside of FAR/BOGO deals. That's the only time I personally buy oil there. Frankly, I can't believe they sell ANY oil, especially in areas where the customer has a choice.

Heck, even Toyota full synthetic 0W-20 can be had for around $6.50/qt. Conventionals at the same price at parts retails just doesn't add up to me.

I just purchased a 5+ quart container of Pennzoil 5W-30 and a filter for $20 at our local farm store-they match local parts stores ads so I assume someone had it on sale. The filter was about $4, the oil was just about $3.20 or so per quart. The single quarts were a little more expensive, but not terribly so.

I didn't find the price that I paid ($20) for a complete oil change unreasonable at all. And I didn't have to step foot into a WalMart.

Tell me about it. The local Orschelns raised the price of synthetic blend Trop-Artic (basically a Motorcraft clone) oil to $2.29 a quart!!!!! That's insane!
I guess from now on I'll have to have my mom buy it to get the senior citizen discount or I'll have to have my son buy it so he can get the 4H/FFA discount and the price will again be under $2 a quart. (Sarcasm now off)
Yes, this is a good enough oil that your engine will outlast the vehicle.

This is why I stash FAR or near FAR oil.
After sales tax, postage and a decent filter, on which I also got an MIR, you end up with a five buck Grp III oil change, or a Grp V change with G-Oil. You can end up with an even cheaper oil change with Maxlife Nexgen 10W-40, perfect for my old BMW.
Buy oil when the steals are available, and ignore the high retail prices.

Yeah,it funny,I know where to get it for $7 a quart, but walking into O'Reilly Autoparts, they think they need to sell it for alil over 9$ a quart.I look at their other prices for their oil,it's ALL OVERPRICED in that store, not sure how they even sell any oil they have in stock.

I'll never understand this either, why some Walmart stores have it on their shelves, and others do not?! Our Walmart doesnt carry it,strange...

The Walmart near me has had RP for $8.47 for at least 2 years, maybe more. They're the dustiest bottles on the shelf

I forgot about Sam's cases of trop artic 5W-30/10W30 the price is well below 3.00 a quart.

Walked into Port Orchard Autozone and they are trying to sell M1 @ $9.30 a quart. I giggled and quietly dumped my oil myself because the guys working pretended to not notice me.

To see that the deals at WalMart are in the 5qt jugs only. The individual qt bottles prices are just as high as what I posted they are at the parts stores.

Why would anyone buy the single quarts is beyond me.

1 - on many vehicles the oil capacity is less than 5 qts so a 5qt jug is too much. Many people don't want to mess around with having to measure out 4-4.5 qts and then deal with the remaining .5-1qt.

2 - many vehicles take more than 5 qts. In that case you either buy the extra qt bottles you need or as with #1 you have to measure and deal with the extra left over.

3 - not every oil line and/or weight is offered or available in the 5qt jug so you then need to buy the qt bottles.

The 5qt jugs are a very good deal. Just not something that fits every car owner's needs nor is it something that you can always find in what you are looking for.

They're not quite 50% of the PepBoys price you quoted, but they're close. PYB is something like $3.99/qt.

Around here the conventional oil in qt bottles at WalMart is within 25-30 cents p/bottle as it is the national and local parts stores. No $3.99 p/qt here.

That's too bad that it's that expensive. It must be a regional thing. So Walmart is selling Castrol GTX for over $6/qt or close to it? Wow.

I bought some oil at Walmart the other day, and here are some prices for comparison. These are all prices of conventional 1-qt bottles.

Super Tech: $2.99/qt
Havoline: $3.47/qt
Quaker State: $3.99/qt
Pennzoil: $4.19/qt (I was wrong earlier; I thought it was $3.99/qt)
Castrol: $4.39/qt

You can buy Mobil 1 in quarts for $6.47/qt here. That's nearly what PepBoys is getting for conventional by you. And it doesn't sound like Walmart is that far behind either.

Havoline (an excellent conventional oil) sells for $13.47 for the 5-qt jug, but even when bought in individual quart bottles, it's $17.35 for five. Plus $3.47 for a Purolator Classic, and you're still at about $21 for a full oil change, with quart bottles if you prefer those.

Man, it's too bad that Walmart is that high up there; I've heard of pricing being slightly different in different regions, but that's wild.

$4 does not equal what you posted.

The prices I posted were for qt bottles not the p/qt cost in 5qt jugs which are pretty much only available at WalMart. It is not a reasonable comparison. Compare the qt bottle prices at WalMart to the qt bottle prices available elsewhere, at least here, and the prices are very close.

People. I am talking about the individual qt bottle prices for conventional oil that is NOT on sale, rebate, or sold in bulk containers for a big discount at WalMart or other places. All of the prices you talk about are valid and true I am sure but you miss the point. When a qt bottle of conventional oil sells for $5-$6+ a bottle that is just nuts.

Remember the topic is regular price on qt bottles. Yes you can get it for less on sale, with rebates, or in bulk at WallyWorld. Never said otherwise. Those deals do not invalidate my point though which is that the regular everyday price has risen to ridiculous levels. The qt bottle price for convenntional oil is now the same or even higher than qt bottles of synthetic was just 1-1.5 years ago.

If it is regular normal everyday price the prices are not with 25% of each other. Most of the time I do not even consider stepping into a autoparts store to buy motor oil. That is how out of hand it has become.

I guess I just don't understand what you are trying to say? All it seems to me is you are arguing about what I have posted? Maybe where you are at WalMart has qt bottles for $4. Not here. It is all within 25 CENTS +/- of the parts stores which means $5-$6+. 5qt jug prices are irrelevant to what I am talking about. I know they are cheaper and I am not arguing that. I am simply talking about the qt bottle prices period.

Guess I have to go into WalMart with my phone and take pictures to prove it.

What I am saying normal everyday price at WM here is 4.37 for the most expensive conventional Castrol GTX single quart price. The least costly conventional non house brand is Formula Shell at 4.49 a quart and the next is Chevron at 4.49 to 4.99 a quart at auto parts stores around here. The other brands are only more expensive per quart. A 5 quart jug of Pennzoil is 13.97 here at Walmart. At a autoparts store a 5 quart jug of Chevron is a little over $21 dollars. So tell me why I would consider even entering an auto parts store around here to buy motor oil. When the most expensive single quart bottle of conventional is 4.37 at Walmart and the least expensive single quart bottle is 4.49 at a auto parts store? Even with a "special" right now at a auto parts store is 2.99 a single quart for Mobil clean. Is 36 cents less than the normal everyday Walmart price than 3.35 a single quart for Mobil Clean. Heck I can buy Pennzoil at Fry's supermarket 2 single quarts for 7 dollars. So I believe in NH you are paying too much for motor oil compared to here.
