Hmmm. Accepting Opinions for Focus.

Well I figured maybe I'll try something different. What to use in the Focus, coming up on 2k miles and I'm going to change out the factory fill. I'm taking opinions on what oil to run. It' specs 5W-20 so I'm looking for either 5W-20 or 0W-20.

I'm looking to follow the "OLM" which is more of a MM type of deal, or follow 7,500-8k runs. Pretty much all highway. I liked the thought of MC Blend 5W-20, but figured it probably won't last long enough. So I may end up doing the usual Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra.

Do you need to adhere to any particular Ford spec? Or is the grade the only thing they spec?

Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra sounds like a good idea. If this is a DI engine, then the low NOACK of new PU would be appealing to me to help minimize deposits, if any.

PU currently $21 at some walmarts and there's a $10 rebate (2 per household).
Additionally you can sign up for the Pennzoil and QS warranty rebates, as this car is eligible based on the low miles. Do this now, stock up on 4-6 jugs of synthetic oil that will be free after rebates, and then only worry about what filters to use.

Free Pennzoil Ultra or Quaker State Ultimate Durability is a better value than M1 IMHO

Motorcraft will work for the entire interval. It's said to be about 60% synthetic

Really, any synthetic blend of Full Synthetic will work for the entire interval prescribed by your OLM.

Here is the 2013 Focus owners manual:
Go to page 308 (you'll have to rotate the page clockwsise though)

You'll see that the specification is WSS-M2C945-A and API, which even cheap Mobil Special meets.

Of course there is nothing wrong with M1 though.

If you're doing all highway, MC Syn Blend should easily last 8,000 miles.

I did Pennzoil conventional from 1,500 to 6,500 miles and it had plenty of life left.

Planning to take the current MC Syn Blend to 8,000 OCI and have that tested. I also expect that to have some life left.

Based on my own experience and that of other current gen Focus owners, you'll be lucky if the OLM pops up before 10,000 miles. Mine popped up at 10,250 and I do suburban driving, 22 miles each way.

Mobil 1 0w-20 meets the specs for my '11 Focus, IIRC. I use it in mine.

But the MC Syn is pretty good oil.

I can't go above 7500 on an OCI, so I have to wait to take full advantage of the 10K OCIs that are possible

Pennzoil only claims better cleaning against regular Mobil 1 5w30, not any of the other grades, and not the EP or AFE family.

I run MC 5w-20 in Hyundai Elantra with no issues...

I use Ultra 5w20 in my 2012 Focus because of the low Noack/DI issue. It seems to "like" the Ultra, no consumption issues, etc.

Maddeningly, as you have no doubt discovered, there's no way on earth to get a fix on what the Intelligent (though uncommunicative) Oil Life Monitor is thinking before it goes off. This leads people to wonder if it's working at all, and confounds those of us that may want to change before the thing hits zero. So I just pick and interval (6mos/5k in deference to DI fuel dilution) and rely on the OLM as a backstop.

Well I went to Walmart to pick some up.would have gotten ultra but its apparently not carried by our local wally anymore. But they did have Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 so I picked up some of that with a motor craft fl-910S.

If you can't find the PU on clearance, Quaker State Ultimate Durability (in 0w20 and 5w20) is $20.97 for the 5 qt. jug everyday at WM. I think it (or the AFE for $4 more) will serve you well.

How does the MPG's of the Focus compare to your Cruze?

Whatever you do, stick with the MC filter. Tig has had great success with Mobil 1 0w20, and I have ran MC 5w20 for ages without fault. Just stick with Ford certified oil and you cannot go wrong.

I see no reason to choose 5w20 over 0w20 if they are the same price. I buy Kendall 0w20 in 12qt cases from an oil distributor located in Pennsylvania and even with the shipping direct to my doorstep I pay under $5/qt. PM me if you are interested.
