'07 Focus, what oil next?

Two weeks ago I purchased an '07 Focus SE 2.0 Duratec. The next day I changed the oil and put in Pennzoil Ultra 5w-20 and a Motorcraft filter. So far, 600 miles into the OCI, I like it. Of course, I have nothing else to compare the Pennzoil Ultra to, since this is my first OCI with the car. But even on mornings in the low single digits, I get no startup tick or anything (besides the notorious Duratec injector noise)

So I'm pretty pleased, and I plan on doing 7,500 mile OCI's. Ford recommended 5,000 mile OCI's for my year Focus, but the very next year, they bumped the '08 model to 7,500 miles with no changes to the engine/oil filter size at all (except drive by wire and some ECU tuning I'm sure). I've never tried any "exotic" oils before, and I was looking for some recommendations for my next OCI. I'm also considering 0w-20 if I can find some for a reasonable price.

I dont think you will find a much better oil than Pennzoil Ultra for a 7.5K OCI. It show good TBN retention and good wear numbers. You can get Pennzoil Platinum 0w=20 from several sources, but you will likely never notice the difference.

I bought some Mobil 1 0w-20 only because I got it for $4 a quart but have not used it yet. Will probably save it for next winter. and use up my Quaker State Ultimate Durability and GB till then.

i believe the manual states that 5,000 miles is the longest you should go on an OCI. Because it also has another section talking about severe service and I think it said 3,000 miles. Can I go 10k/1 year with a motorcraft filter though? I'm using the fl-910s, so it isn't too large.

The "s" on the end of the filter number is for silicone anti-drain valve. That is usually the best to have when going something like 10k miles. It should be fine.

Ah, interesting. Thank you for that info! I knew that the filter had a silicone ADBV, but i used to think that "s" on the end of the filter description stood for "short", as some Motorcraft filters began using a thread-on bypass valve and became shorter not too long ago. But how is the filtering capacity/efficiency on the MC filters, compared to say a P1 or a Napa Gold?

I have an 03' Focus with the 2.3L Duratec.

I think using PU with a OCI of 7500 makes sense...but I would use a better filter for that OCI. I would suggest a Purolator PureOne. MC filters are good (made by Purolator) but IMO, I wouldn't go beyond 6000 OCI on them.

If oil changes are not in your blood, and you expect to drive about 12K or so a year, you might consider Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20, and do one year OCI's (with and upper tier filter such as Mobil 1 Extended Performance or the Bosch Distance.

Motorcraft filters will handle that OCI. Some of the new Ford engines call for a 10K OCI w/ MC's.

You beat me to saying that. I just remembered that. But okay, for oils... I want to try something new and exciting for my next OCI... gotta think ahead

Other than a superb Redline or an Amsoil product, the Toyota or Honda Genuine 0w-20 (not 5w-20) have a TON of moly in them. But, I'd say you made a good choice already and maybe should concentrate on suspension upgrades or stereo. Oh, sorry I forgot this is the BITOG forum

I'll go out on a limb - how bout the new SN MC-SS and save some moolah for a McDonalds Angusburger (with pickles no cheese) ...

i got 38mpg in summer with Mobil 1 0w20...5 speed 07 focus...engine still runs like new at 71k

I have the 4-speed automatic, but I'm still getting ~29 mpg with winter gasoline and several cold starts in the single digits each tank. I'm very happy with the car so far. I used to own a Zx2 with the Zetec 2.0, and I can't believe how much more refined and smooth the Duratec 20 is than the Zetec it replaced.

Why not just run the PU if it runs good? Run the first OCI short and let it do its job then perhaps run to 7500 and get a used oil analysis on the next run.
