Highway Trooper got me doing 88 in a 65 early this morning

You got a major break on that one. My Uncle Karl a retired Pennsylvania State Trooper told me years ago about going over the speed limit -- "three your fine -- five your mine!!!" That has stuck with me since he said that many many moons ago.
Ps. In the state of Pa. "only" State Police are permitted to use radar guns.

I think he was just kidding you. I've seen people drive 15 over right past PA troopers and they barely bat an eye. 20 over and you're in trouble. Of course, I'm talking on the high speed highways.

Last time I almost got pulled over was about 10 years ago. Was going about 85 in the middle lane and the trooper was parked on the right shoulder. I didn't see him. He came out and tailed me for a mile pretty close to my rear bumper. About 3 car lengths behind me still in the middle lane. Of course by now I was going a more reasonable speed of about 70 in the 65 zone. For some unknown reason, a car on the left lane changed lanes and got between me and the trooper. There wasn't much room for him to fit between the trooper and me. The trooper hit the lights and pulled that car over.

My mother told me the same but I figured she was just lying so I wouldn't speed knowing how strict the cops are.
It was bizaire. I had to go to the town clerk to pay the fine. The clerk was astonished at the charge. She cut the price of the ticket in half.

Please stay on topic. What other countries political & social agenda may be doesn't really matter in this context. As it immediately caused an arguement those posts were removed.

I'd rather not lock this topic.

I'm not even sure why there's an LEO involved.

Put up a camera, mail a fine. Base the fine on the difference between the speed limit, the speed recorded, and the speeder's income level.

Simple and inexpensive to employ.

might have already been posted but in some states these have been beat as it captures the car and not the driver.

Nice! Gotta like someone else taking the hit for you.

3 car lengths? That's a pretty generous amount, at least down in Mass/CT.

I drove again on the road today and saw a 55 MPH sign due to it being near a construction zone, so I was 33 MPH over the speed limit.

....

He asked me why I’m speeding, I told him I’m headed 50 miles away and theres little traffic on the road. Luckily he gave me a warning and let me go. I was very surprised he didn’t give me a ticket.

Possibly because you on the cusp of "endangerment" and he might have had to either impound your car to even arrest you...

That's true. I took a trip by Upstate NY earlier this month and had bad service. Even I couldn't report police when I saw them! In that case, I stayed around 65-70 (Speed limit was 65)....
...

They typically won't touch until you're over 75mph most parts...

I got pulled over for doing 110 in a 55 once before. The cop came over a hill coming in the opposite direction on an old highway. He said sir, do you know how fast you were going? (the speedometer didnt work in that car) I told him I did not, but I knew I was going faster than 55. He told me he didn't know those old RX7s went that fast. I told him it had a mustang motor swap and I was just curious what it would do so I was testing it in an extremely low traffic 3 lane straight line area. Got told it was cool, he wanted to see the motor and hear the story. He let me off with an It's okay to do that here, but just be honest if you get pulled over and if he sees another car around, I get a ticket.

Really? Dopes. The highways are overburdened in the Boston area. The only way to give them capacity is to increase the speed limit and open the breakdown lanes. Guess which one is more dangerous? On Interstate -93 going South, if you aren't doing 85 or so in the left two lanes you are impeding traffic. I think Its posted ^% but I dont pay attention to that. The State Police appear allow this during rush hour.
Failure of State and Federal Govt to provide appropriate infrastructure or Mass Transportation like HS rail.

The public should not be punished for this failing. Plus this is 2020 not 1950. Speed limit should be 80 on interstates in the left two Thru Traffic lanes.

It's not the cars, it's the highway. Most US highways were never engineered for much above 70, if they are or do, then it will be a significant tax increase along with driving fees. It costs thousands to get a license in some countries like Germany, that's why they can engineer better highways...

Or, it would cause the person at that income level to lawyer up and beat the ticket.

The fine is only the surface cost, there is three years’ worth of insurance premium increase after the conviction.

If I’m facing a $2,500 fine, you bet I’ll lawyer up. It will cost me a lot less than the ticket and save me the insurance increase.

Potential net result from that policy: the wealthy have a lower conviction rate for various traffic infractions.

In NY you can get $300 "parking tickets". They now reduce the charge and eliminate points on your license but keep the steep speeding fines...

I've heard that 'enforcement' is going to get very tight.....in order to make up for 'lost revenue' during the 'pandemic'.....and you thought these tickets were about 'public safety'....

A flooring installer at my company was stopped for going 30 over in a construction zone(double fine in Colorado) and it cost him $730.
I have Marine Corps plates on my car and hope that might cut me a little slack.
I do try to stay at the posted limit and obey traffic rules but sometimes you just aren't paying attention.

Just last night there were 4 state troopers pulling people over in a mile section where they've never been before.

This article refutes that. Our highways are fine. Driving in Germany is fun, though.

As a point of reference, when I was a judge in traffic court I was the toughest on the defendants who were speeding in active school zones or construction zones, as well as congested residential streets. That said, I didn't think a guy going 100 mph on a deserted interstate at 3:00 AM was a big deal. My chief traffic prosecutor-who shared my philosophy-had a Mustang GT and an extremely heavy right foot; she also wound up being elected judge, replacing a guy who thought that you risked certain death if you drove 1 mph over 55(he drove a grungy Malibu wagon and a Cavalier, so his fear may have been well founded). She and I both believed that anyone caught camping out in the left lane should be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. At a minimum.

Who all here remembers the 55mph speed limit? Going 55 now feels like you're barely moving!
It’s much safer to drive at 70-75 mph..... than to be ‘stuck’ in a 55 mph traffic jam and all it takes is one idiot to make a mistake and cause a major wreck.

As soon as I get caught in a slow moving traffic jam I get anxiety and snake my way to pass the idiots holding up traffic. The very last thing you wants is to be next to an 85,000 pound 18 wheeler and a motorist causes a wreck.
