High Performance Lubricants Engine Cleaner

I don't know if this should go here or in the filters cut open thread? This is the XG7317 with 3k on it of EC30 and M1 from the 227k CRV. I kept wrapping the filter a bunch of times. I see some black specks that I presume is carbon. By the look of it I'm not to worried about using a full qt of EC30 on next change. She'll probably be home for Thanksgiving next so will probably just change her oil then anyway (and winter tire install). Whatever mileage that is I'll do the same and post it.

Thanks for the filter post. Did/does the CRV burn oil? David advised me to keep a top-off mixture of oil/EC in mine throughout the OCI.

Based on these photos, I would love to hear someone's take on how well it appears the HPL EC broke up carbon over 3,000 miles.

I know the BITOG-collective is mainly boomer/curmodgeons who don't use social media like FB/IG:

FaceBook - what I do when I sit on the couch with that thing with many actual paper pages and a front and back cover.

The extent of my social media is SnapChat so the kids and I send a picture everyday wile they are away at school. Send a daly picture to keep "streak" alive. At least I know they are still OK. Don't need to call or text even unless they want to. Smile, send picture, done.

The CRV does not seem to burn much oil. I think I wipe off more than it burns since I check each time I buy gas.

My daughter drives conservative and doesn't beat on it. Me in my 6MT Accord and my son in his Forte well that's a different story. Need to make sure the rev limiter works as designed. :D .

Swapped out the PP 5W-20, EC30 and XG7317. Replaced it with the same. 3900 miles on oil, 177k on the car.

Never seen this before on any of my filters I've cut open. Letting it drain more then will paper towel wrap. The oil fill shot was clean and silvery prior and is now still. The oil after a 20 mile drive is clean unlike some cars I see where even after oil change it's real dark already.

How much of the carbonaceous material in the pleats can be scraped off? That looks like a LOT of carbon IMO, at least one more round of EC (and 3-5k filter change with a “regular” filter) is well-warranted. I don’t know that I’d personally spring for an XG during the cleaning phase, but it certainly isn’t a “wrong” decision. 👍🏻

Unknown- its in the garage at home draining a bit more. It has a fresh 3.1qts of PP 5W-20 and 1 qt EC30 in it now and the new XG7317. I have like 8 in stock and just ordered 6 Hyundai filters for the Tucson and the Forte. I'll probably do a full change in another ~ 3k. It might even get 1 more of EC30 after this. I was going to use that qt on my Accord as a 2nd dose, like the CRV will get also.

I cut the 3500k filter from the Accord before. 2-3 small carbon specks and then just really small just dark coloring stuff in the pleats. Not too concerned on the Accord. I'm going to order some PCMO 5W-30 and start using a qt per change for now. Not planning for extended OCI's.

Sorry- I mixed posts and answered with the Forte.

The CRV filter media is gone but when I tried scraping I didn't get too much. I'll let you know in a couple weeks when she gets home. I plan to do a new PP 5W-20 and EC30 round on it again at that time anyway. The oil that comes out will have about 5k on it, the filter 2k.

I'm only on my 3rd OCI, but the 2nd filter had less, and I expect the 3rd filter will have less still.
There’s something powerful to be said about the feeling when you’re literally driving your engine “clean”. There are lots of “good enough” oils that will greatly slow accumulation of oil-related byproducts.

I know which one my engine will see… HPL EC30. High miles and heavy use beware…

My 2nd focus is seeing HPL NO VII 5w20 just like the white 11’ Focus I drive.

Still wishing that HPL creates an Engine cleaner with ANs and Esters.

I know people will say use the oil if you want ANs and Esters. For some, who can not do long OCIs due to dilution etc. It would be nice to have a prophylactic treatment to use with regular of the oil shelf for their desired interval without breaking the bank.

Substituting a quart of EC with quart of the shelf oil only adds $7-10 dollars an OCI assuming regular oil prices versus, $40 using the straight HPL oil.

Don’t AN and Esthers compete with each other?

You could run Mobil 1 FS 0w40 with a quart of EC for roughly the same price as you’re doing now. I haven’t asked Dave yet, but I assume there’s a good reason why the EC contains polar esters only, and not the AN/ester combo.

You could always run 1 quart of HPL PCEO in your mix rather than the quart of EC…
