I have a 98 mazda 626 2.0 4 cyl. Oil capacity 3.7 quarts. It has 212000 miles on it. Runs great. Clean engine. No smoke from the exhaust. last oci was 5084 miles with T/A syn blend 10W30. Top off was 3.5 quarts during oci. Oil consumption appears to be less with this oil compared to other 10w30 oils I have used.

I'm wondering if I should try a highmileage brand XX 10w30 or just try dino brand XX 10w40 to help slow down consumption.
ps. car does not leak oil.

thanks leel

10-40 5-40 0-40 will help you out. Since you have run a Dino/Synthetic Blend I would try a full synthetic in the weights above. To help in the cost factor, go with 7,500 OCI's.

Since your consuming so much oil I would just do an annual oil change for the sake of putting on a new filter. You can go either way here. You can stick with the 10w30 or move up to 10w40. 15w40 diesel oil would also be an alternative.

At $1.48 quart Wal*Mart price, just keep chugging along with the T/A. If you were leaking oil, blowing a little smoke or had a dirty engine, then the Castrol High Mileage would be my first choice to alleviate those symptoms -- without spending alot more on Auto-Rx.

I lowered consumption by ARXing a 167k B2200 Mazda with the same motor and more power. I did the pcv, grommet and hose and usually one is bad on that motor. I haven't decided what to use after ARXing but I've been using 1/2 delo, 1/2 5-20 Chevron as homebrew 10-30. My Mazda just didn't like 10-40 as far as lifter noise goes.

As long as you add that much oil you can try going from 10-30 to 10-40 by adding thicker oil like delo or other truck HDEO one gt at a time. Castrol HM 20-50 makes a great add oil to gradually thicken your brew if you start at 10-30 GTX HM. I used that on my daughter's similar mileage tercel and cut consumption at around 10-40. I just started to ARX the Tercel more for the rings ( her 1500 3e engine runs dirty) and the tercel needs more power.

"Want to try an oil that will stop some of that burning? Try Castrol 10w-40 HM. That stuff is hearty oil."

Why does that make me think of a Campbell's Chunky Soup commercial? Anyway, I agree, Castrol HM 10W-40 would put an end to your oil consumption issues in a hurry.

You are burning 100% of the oil through the OCI?

I don't think so. More like a leak. A leak that is flowing into the creeks and rivers.

Get the leak fixed. Then start back using oil that cost more than $1 per quart.

Until spring comes I would at least consider a 5W40. If the price is too high wait till spring and run Rotella 15W40 or Delvac 15W40.

I previously used Castrol 5w30 Dino oil in my 93 Civic. On a trip to NY, (3K miles round trip), I burned 3 qts. The engine had 85K miles at the time. I switched to Amsoil 0w30 at 119K miles. The same trip some years later using the Amsoil 0

bump, update, I'm trying super tech hm 10w30 and started topping off with st hm 10w40 to see if this helps. I may try castrol hm 10w30 next oc or rottella syn 5w40. any thoughts?

I don't agree. On a newer car yes. But on an older vehicle using oil and that has a worn engine, I've found a thicker oil can increase compression and balance out some the horse-power loss due to higher viscosity...

I went through gradually increasing the viscosity of my oil over the years (21) from 5w30 to 20w-50 and finally did a double Auto-RX treatment. With 480k+ miles, I'm now back to 5w30 with very little consumption. I my case, the consumption must have been due more to sludge and stuck rings than actual mechanical wear.

I agree with Trip here.
