Mom’s car consuming Valvoline Restore and Protect like crazy

I posted awhile back that my dad was going to start using Valvoline Restore and Protect in my mom’s 2016 Sonata 2.4 NA. At 88k miles, it had a diet of Valvoline conventional 5w-20 its whole life, changed every 4,500 miles or so. It has always used oil, and in recent times consumes about 2 quarts per OCI. I convinced my dad to try Valvoline Restore and Protect, and in the 5w-30 flavor, especially given H/K engine reliability (FWIW, her car didn’t fall into the problematic window of bad engines, but still).

She’s only 800 miles into this OCI, and it has already burned a full quart. Has anyone seen INCREASED consumption with Valvoline Restore and Protect? The car is still under the 10/100k warranty and I suggested he take it into the dealer so they can measure the consumption. Not sure if they fill it, seal it, and measure it after 1,000 miles. But I’m guessing a quart per 800 miles might qualify them for a new engine.

good luck make them show you the dipstick before they seal it.
Some Dealers like to overfill for the test because warranty work is low paying.

I busted a Subaru dealer doing that on the oil consumption test for a 2013 outback that was consuming 1qt per 1000-2000 miles (depending on use)

Second test it failed when light came on at 1200 miles
after I asked them to show me the dipstick and then seal it.

That car got a ring job, then a new short block under warranty.
(early fb25+ MT was a recipe for consumption)

Not sure which month this car was built but file a warranty claim NOW. Your 100k miles have not kicked in yet but your 10 years have, or are about to. A 2016 car could have been built any time in late 2015. Waste no time. Start a formal oil consumption test with the dealer.

Car was a leftover 2016 purchased in June 2017. Time isn’t an issue yet.

Any car model is usually built/assembled the previous year.
If the deal look at the production date and that is 2nd half of 2015 you have a couple months to claim unusual oil consumption.
If the deal look the actual model year (2016) you have several months to do oil consumption test and then an official claim.

I’m just curious though, what would cause this rapid increase in consumption? It’s using a thicker grade than before, and the oil should do some cleaning. I’m guessing maybe it cleaned some junk off the rings and now it’s letting oil by.

The in-service date is always what matters. Not when the vehicle is built. That is confirmed to be June 2017.

I have mentioned elsewhere that my 3.3 V6 Santa Fe (2017) is extremely random in what oil levels it shows. Basically it shows correctly the first time I pull the stick after it sits for a while, then the whole stick gets smeared in oil all over. Are your levels consistent ? Does it show the same thing when you plug the stick five times in a row ?

One way or the other - it doesn't matter what happened. Start an oil consumption test with your dealer. The worst that can happen is you'll pay an extra oil change at dealership prices with whatever oil they throw in. If they are in any way similar to my dealership - the first time they'll just do an oil change and tell you to come back in 1000 miles, and only then, if the level is too low, will they do formal measurements with anti-tamper stickers and whatnot. I'm still 350 miles in on my first test.

My daughter's 2017 Sonata did this. We took it to the dealer, who did an oil change, and sent it on its way. Telling us to come to the dealership weekly for them to check it. They did it right in the service lot. After the third week, an engine was ordered. They did not seal anything.

They typically get worse for a while as it loosens the carbon and it causes the rings to stick a bit worse. Happens after doing a Berrymans piston soak too for a bit till the carbon all dislodges. You know you could easily do a piston soak using Berrymans B12 too. its works way quicker. You could say immediately. Use the Valvoline Restore and Protect to polish it off and let the B12 piston soak do the heavy lifting. Continue to use the Valvoline Restore and Protect too keep it clean for the rest of its life. Its what I'm doing with our 2018 Audi Q7 with the low tension ring pack. We went from a quart in 400 miles to no oil usage in 5000 mile intervals with the B12 piston soak and Valvoline Restore and Protect.

Might be worth checking the PCV system.

It goes by purchase date not assembly date

Not sure what these words mean, but in service date is what matters, not when the car was built or model year.

Warranty it now not later. If that rp does some work if might reduce consumption enough to where you won't get a free short block anymore then it will fail out of warranty.
This ^^^^

It is well known that cars tend to fix themselves every time one would try to involve the warranty. Don't give it that chance.

doubtful once those hyundai/kia engines start burning they get worse.
Friend had a 2017 santa fe.. it was upto a quart every 600 miles when he traded it off.
he was second owner so no 10/100 warranty.

You do know with a Hyudai/KIa, IT MAY TAKE 5 to 7 oil changes of Valvoline Restore and Protect to clean up the ring pack. And use ONLY 5w-30.
