I currently have 123K miles on my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Inline 6. I developed a small leak at the rear main seal at 80K miles or so. Did the Auto-rx a couple of times using conventional oil during and after which stopped the leak but would eventually returns. I was considering switching to a High Mileage oil. What brand would you recommend and are there any downsides to this oil at all? Also, do I need to keep using this oil or is this something I can switch to every few oil changes?

Thanks.

All High Milegae oils have a seal conditioner to help keep seals pliable and functioning. If a seal is worn, it is worn - no oil will fix a worn seal. No downside to using a High Mileage oil, even in a new car. Use your favorite brand.

. Not all seals that leak are damaged. The seal may seat better once cleaned. High mileage oils can do that. I prefer Castrol High Mileage over all the rest. Like all high mileage oils, you may not see the improvement until the 2nd or 3rd OCI. Stick with it for a while. Show some patience with it.

I have not had as much luck with the Maxlife product with regard to leaks. Castrol High Mileage seems to do a better job.

Try Mobil 1 High Mileage oil in either 10w30 or 40, great oil.

The rope type seal is easy to replace and that would be my way of fixing this issue. A common problem with this wonderful engine. 3X rear oil seals in 250,000 miles ant bad at all.

The Mobil 1 High Mileage has the older, pre-emission 'SL' rating. All the other Mobil 1 gasoline oils are SM. Plus, the 10w30 is only $19.99 at WalMart for a 5-qt jug.

Used Walmart Supertech High Mileage in 1989 Accord with 190K miles. The valvecover gaskets stoppecd leaking within a few hundred miles. A friend used Supertech High Mileage in Civic for distruber leak. It fixed that too.
