Hello, all. I'm getting ready to do an oil change on our 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 V8. The car has 83k miles and the engine leaks a little oil (approx 3-4 drops overnight). I also noticed signs of sludge looking under the oil fill cap. It needs a quart about at the time an oil change is due (4k miles). Which high mileage oil would you recommend or should I just keep up my normal dino changes.

I'm not sure on what basis this is done, but there seems to be more recommendations here for Castrol High Mileage than for any other High Mileage oil. Valvoline Maxlife High Mileage seems to be a close second.
Again, I don't what the basis is for this. Could be a feel good or brand loyalty thing; could be based on UOA, or could be some of both.

GTX HM. Blended thick. The 5w30 is really good. I think leaks are not as treated by an oil compared to just a weep or wet seal. I'd say fix the leak and find a good oil afterwards.
Go for Mobil 1 10w30HM. I like the 3.66 HTHS ACEA A3/B3

I've used Maxlife 5w30 and if I still used High Mileage oils, would use Castrol.

Here's another vote for Castrol High Mileage. Like all high mileage oils, one OCI may not be enough to finish the job. So buy enough High Mileage oil for at least two OCIs.

fix the leak,do couple cycles of auto-rx, then use Mobil 1 to keep the engine from further sludge and maybe M1 will also clean more.
I'm pretty sure it won't clean anything, but it would probably keep it cleaner longer.
With a Saturn that burns no oil I was going to ask what High Mileage oil myself. I guess I'll pick up some jugs of Castrol.

Personally I'd try the Maxlife oil for a few OCIs to see if the leak goes away. Either way It'd have to leak a heck of a lot worse than that before I'd shell out the hundreds of $$$ to have a seal replaced. I just don't see the cost benefit there of investing that kind of money into a depreciating asset due to a very minor problem. Especially one that might be resolved through other less costly means.

I've never seen it in the colonies however.
I too have a '97 model year vehicle, mine does not drip any oil, but if it did, and it was only 3-4 drops a night, I would SURELY wait until it was at least 30-40 drops a night.
I am NOT a fan, by any means, of a vehicle that leaks fluids, but 3-4 drops of oil is surely no cause for immediate concerns of replacing a possible - hard to get to - seal/gasket. Specially when, on older vehicles, the disruption of moving parts/seals around can cause other more expensive issues, been there, done that on an '85 Toyota 22re!
If it was leaking antifreeze or ATF, I'd HIGHLY recommend fixing it ASAP, cause those system areas are not typically leakers, and, if neglected are prone to failure due to loss of fluid.

I've been thinking about Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30, but I keep waiting for someone else to try it first. Being that I plan on changing the oil sometime between June and July, I might just have to be the first guy.
I saw that HM M1 yesterday at Wal-Mart @ $24/ gallon. Looks like a good replacement for the GC that I can't get anymore. Think 5 to 7k is a decent interval for a V6 Toyota that is historically tough on oil?
