HIgh Mileage Oils

Good evening everyone,
Is it necessary to run High Mileage oils and if so when? I use full synthetic oil at a 7,500 OCI. My Civic does all highway and has just over 74k miles and my wife's CRV does mixed city/hwy with 67k miles. Is there a benefit to switching to High Mileage synthetic or is it okay to keep running regular synthetic? There is a guy on the CRV forum claiming that Valvoline High Mileage caused sludge in his engine, so that sort of scared me off of High Mileage oils. I'm curious as to what advantage High Mileage full synthetic has over regular synthetic. Thanks for the help in advance.

If the car is not leaving an oil spot on the driveway, then it won't hurt to switch to HM but also won't noticeably help anything. To me, 75K is not even remotely high mileage. I'd just continue to use the cheapest regular oil the manual says to use.

You can use HM at any time it meets the latest specs and certs.

It has extra detergents and moisturizing lotion for the neoprene seals; do you need that?

Some crazy people will tell anecdotes of seals that start leaking after you use High Mileage oil and then stop. Including me. I'll never use it again in any car that doesn't already have leaking seals. "75000 miles" is marketing.

I've never used High Mileage oils in well over 40 years of vehicle ownership. If the engine is not leaking or burning oil I would stick with regular conventional or synthetic.

Even if you could get the High Mileage oil $7 cheaper a Jug and it wouldn't hurt your car?

I've never seen High Mileage oil that much cheaper than regular oil.

I have a decade old car and have switched back and forth no issues before or since.

I've switched to and left Valvoline Maxlife without incident. Including my present car. Primarily a matter of price.

I'm curious about the sludging story. Took a quick look at the cited forum and couldn't find it. Could the OP poster find it and repost link here?

I have only used High Mileage oils in the '80 FORMULA in my signature as it does have leaks. The High Mileage oils have indeed slowed down those leaks including the slight oil blow by that I was experiencing. Now after about 10 yrs of High Mileage oils, I don't have to add makeup oil between OCIs.

It made no difference in my 09 oil burner that has no leaks... High Mileage used no more or no less. My sons 04 Taurus had a rear valve cover leak and instead of busting my knuckles all afternoon I opted for High Mileage oil. Less than 500 miles and the leak was gone and hasn't returned in 10k. The current oil is 5w20 Quaker State Ultimate Durability and it's still not leaking.

In my opinion/experience, it has really taken several years in my particular Firebird V8 to really notice the benefits of the High Mileage oils. It didn't happen over night or even the first year but, it has worked to some extent for my engine. As mentioned, I've been using exclusively, the High Mileage oils(MaxLIFE, QS DEFY, Pennzoil conventional High Mileage) for about 10 yrs now.

I had 215,000 miles on a Ford F-150 and never used high mileage. Always used Mobil 1 synthetic 5-20 and never burned a drop. I don't think 75,000 miles is high mileage at all in todays world.

My F150 has 188,000 miles - and it's never had "High Mileage" oil in it's life...

well, maybe 1/2 qt if I was getting rid of an old bottle, but I have never "filled the sump" with high-mileage oil.

It doesn't burn or leak a drop, either. It's currently got Mobil 1AP ("Annual Protection") 5W-20 that's been in for about 12,000 miles

Well considering you'd told us about another time you got a rebate from SOPUS, doesn't that make 2 of 4 times you correctly filled out the rebate form and submitted the info? About two years ago, I bought a ton of PUP off WM.com and myself, mom, and stepson all got 2x rebates each that year, so 100% of the submissions.
