So I bought a set of about 12 HF end cap wrenches. I may have used one in the 5 years since I bought it. I normally use a band wrench. Trying to get the hydraulic filter off my Bobcat. Its on very tight and not enough leverage for a band wrench. So I pull out the HF set, its a large filter but the largest is too big and next one down is too small. Wrap some tape around the filter and tap on the end cap wrench. The small spot welded plate with a 3/8" square hole falls off. Cheap spot welds I guess. Now to look around for other options.

I got one of those oil filter removal sets for Christmas one year - came with like 9 or 10 different end caps but made of plastic. Only one fit anything I had and even then it would not bite enough to turn the filter - just slip. Complete junk. I would like to one day have a nice STEEL set, but for now my strap style tools do the job.

I use those on almost anything. you can do a 45% or more out angle and still get good leverage. Which brings up the question.. why is the filter on that tight? You could weld a nut on the end of the filter.. you could also try the old duct tape sandpaper trick last time I had a really stuck one I couldnt get off I ended up flattening it and carefully beating it with a hammer and chisel. as soon as it moved 1/12 turn I had no problem getting it off.

Ah the Bozo mechanic tightness I had the dealer do mine once after surgery... i nearly had to have a hernia surgery getting the filter off next time ??? crush That wrench looks good as long as your filter fits that size range... (most should)

Well they look interesting, however the Bobcat filter may be an odd size (non automotive) and thus I would still have the problem with the wrench being too big or too small. Interesting the HF no longer sells a large set of end cap wrenches, just a smaller set (number of wrenches).

Well the one by Lisle did the trick in about 20 seconds. Now I wonder why I have all these end cap wrench from HF. The filter was a WIX, thought it was a Bobcat. Who knows if it was even the right filter. The prior owner it seems tried to cut corners.

I've been using.....just one wrench for the last 30 years. I picked it up at a garage sale and have since added a couple more when I see them at yard sales. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00951663000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1 This wrench will fit around any spin on filter and there will be no more problems with stuck filters ever again. It makes short work of freeing up any spin on filter. IMO....Absolutely the best wrench you can use on any spin on oil filter and other items that need a little persuasion.

Ah, Yes. Have one of these in my tool box. Had to use it once on someone else's filter.

I my case I needed something to come off the end of the filter and go out 8" to 12" (normal 1/2" extensions) so I could get the leverage and movement needed (needs to clear the engine bay on my Bobcat). But I like the wrench you suggest and will look at getting one. Good to have options for removing various filters.
