Hertz is selling off a portion of its Tesla fleet... cheap.

You can get a Prius battery with BRAND NEW cells for $2K: https://www.greentecauto.com/hybrid...rius-hybrid-battery-with-new-generation-cells

Meanwhile, take my 2015 Volt for example... there are no new cells available. There is nothing to rebuild unless you just want to mix-and-match used cells. Even though its 17Kwh total/10Kwh usable pack is small compared to most "real" EVs, the lack of availability of new cells is the bigger problem.

Long term rebuilding will never work out unless new cells are available. And vehicle manufacturers have no incentive to make new cells available for past EVs.

What I'm trying to say is you can't compare the low cost and ease of replacing a battery in a Prius to doing battery work in literally any actual EV.
I think that's why it's not more widespread as well. My understanding of the rebuilt Tesla batteries was that they were taking used batteries and finding like level cells so they played nicely with the other good ones. In the end the full rebuild might have a little less range than a new one, but its cheaper than a brand new one. Electrified Garage was and maybe still is buying salvage cars to get part inventory.

Yeah, I am familiar with Rich Rebuilds' YouTube channel. As for the prices, I saw some of these in the lower 20s locally in the Austin area, they must have gotten snapped up fast. $29K would definitely be a non-starter, I have seen used ID.4s with very low mileage for that kind of price.

I found an interesting one on AutoTempest if you aren't stuck on a Tesla and can live with the relatively low charging rate of the Bolt/Bolt EUV. Also a Hertz sale. Less than $23K and 19K miles.

...or, here's a ID.4 ProS for $25K in Fort Worth, less than 15K mi:

Yes, I know this, the Prius cells are exactly what I was referring to. Companies like this could scale up, Tesla would be the obvious choice because they used standardized cells within the battery packs.

Given those options I think the ID.4 is the most appealing. I originally ordered one of those for my wife anyway. She's no longer interested after having her current car now, but I sometimes give them a glance when I'm at the VW dealer.

can you rebalance the lfp batteries in the sr models?

I'm not sure. They haven't been around very long and I haven't personally heard of any replacements, but I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be able to. If anything it might be easier since they have a much smaller operating voltage range. The biggest problem with replacing cells is how solidly sealed with adhesive the battery cases are.

I was thinking 10-15k as "cheap"
The cheapest Hertz cars were gone in hours, one appears to have been bought by a dealership oddly and is now more expensive, how nice of thrm

This one could have been $13,600 after credit.

At that mileage that honestly sounds like a good deal assuming the car itself doesn't look rough.
Hertz used generic stock imagery for some cars.

That specific car was one of a few with more reasonable miles for the price, sadly Hertz has ramped up prices on everything else

Tesla's used car section also uses generic images. Never understood how someone could buy a vehicle without seeing it first. Most rentals are going to be in fairly poor aesthetic condition with dings and scratches/scuffs, but at that low of a price I suppose you can't expect otherwise.

A lot of those Teslas were driven hard and put away wet as Ubers or Lyfts. There’s a Hertz here that was the designated Uber location for their leasing program.

I think they have 7 days return policy so that helps.

Buying a Tesla is a win.

Buying a Tesla for cheap is another win.

Win-win situation.

Maybe its bad to buy regular ex-rental cars. Teslas are made with the same space age technology that will put humans on Mars

Do you buy used underwear? Like batteries, they never get better with time.

Hertz announced late last week it replaced their CEO, who which was credited for the EV fiasco which turned bad.
Stock price down 30%. Some boards of these giant companies are just clueless who they hire. Sometimes board rooms filled with elites are out of touch with the everyday running of a company/meaning critical thinking.
