Here's my fram filter at least 18 thousand miles

And it's not too flow restrictive, as shown by info from Motorking. Besides, a positive displacement oil pump can only cut oil flow to the engine when it's in pressure relief. Now if the filter was ran 18K miles on a pretty dirty engine then it could become flow restrictive from debris loading.

Did all these bad running engine symptoms show up the day the Ultra was installed? Or was it after many thousands of miles?

Here's a closer pic. It doesn't look like it's full. I'll try and take it apart later.
The symptoms we're from the beginning. I have another filter on for around 2000 miles and it's still fine.

Adam-the 4967 is the OEM filter for my xB, the 3600 is the longer version (which I use). The XG8A has the same thread and close to the same gasket, but the can is wider (fits on my Jeep, as will the OEM XG16A, and the XG3600 fits the XJ's 4.0 too).

Yeah, the 3/4 -16 thread has several options.

Smaller to larger (Fram Numbers): 4967, 2951, 4386, 8316, 3600, 16 and 8A (and maybe others).
These sizes all have similar bypass pressure (12-14) and similar size o-rings.
The 16 and 8A sizes are quite a bit bigger in diameter, so may not fit the Asian motors due to clearance.

Part of me wants to buy an 8A size filter just to see if it would fit on my Scion.
Hmm, maybe just for giggles Imay buy a Supertech 8a from Walmart and just put it on for a pic then cut it open.

Because somehow all the miles before and after the use of this filter when the problem didn't/ doesn't exist is irrelevant, right? It just couldn't be the filter, right?
Or do you just have too much time on your hands and you figure you like to link my other posts about different topics in different forums to this one because it makes you not feel smart?
Is that sorta like stalking or something?

Yes it could be the filter. It was more of a question about the oil making difference. Some people use Fram Ultra's and have noise. Using one on my Elantra and it is quiet.

Are you going to let Fram know? Years ago I replaced the filter in a 99 Saturn with a Wix one. After 2k found a 1" hole in it. Wix was very interested what happened. However, never put another Wix air filter in that car.

I see. Well In that case I apologise. I precived your earlier comment to be sarcastic but I can see I was obviously wrong.
I really didn't think to contact fram about it to be honest.
That's disappointing to hear about the wix failure you had. Seems they are well regarded as is the fram ultra around here.

They are a bit thin, but when was the last time we heard of someone on here bursting open an oil filter? I can't recall it ever happening in 16 years of this site, for any oil filter.

Wait... what? Why did you use an XG4967 on this engine?

Being that this is a Mazda 1.5 liter, I assume this is a Mazda 2? Dont know any other Mazda's in the US that use this engine.

I have never seen XG4967 (or its relative equivalent) recommended for this engine... anywhere. Its always been the small 6607 sized filters, which some people bump up to the slightly longer 7317.

Not only that, but the XG4967 is a 3/4-16 thread, the recommended filter for a Mazda 1.5 has a 20mm x 1.5mm thread.

What filter do you have on it now?

I thought long a hard before using an Ultra on my Elantra. I had some questions that were answered by Motorking, the FRAM Tech director that posts here. Here is his contact info if you ever want to contact him:

I have had a lot of bad experiences with aftermarket parts causing problems. My rule in general is to use OEM parts and following OEM recommendations to reduce variables that may cause problems. Good luck in sorting this out!

The original post smells a bit fishy. A Fram 4967 isn't going to fit on a Mazda Protegé. It takes a 6607 or Wix 51365. SAE threads on the 4967 and metric on the 6607. Can you say buggered up threads and oil leak? Besides that, how many mid to late 1990 era Protegé are still around?

I think what kind've got me was when one time I was installing a TG and I smushed it slightly with my bare hands as I gripped it while tightening it.

Unless I cut the wrong one. I had 2 sitting on top of my fridge at home. 1 from off Mazda 2 and 1 from the Yaris. The other one is a bit longer.
Had no problems with the yaris

I see ok, I never seen an actual oem Mazda filter anywhere. Whenever I googled or went to parts store I was given several options but just after market. I bought several white Purolator dirt cheap at Walmart clearance and I got some Beck n arnley with rounded o rings. Supposed to be identical to the oem ones. Pretty much all those will take the next 60 k miles or so to use up.
I'm not mad about the fram or anything. Just sharing my experience.
