Seriously, I have thought for years the pinnacle of automatic trans development was the 4l80E. Smooth, simple, and very long lasting.

But my new 2013 3500 Express is a six speed 6l90E and it is fantastic on the road. It won't even consider top gear unless you go over 50 no matter what you do. VERY nice slushbox.

Mo speeds equals mo betta trans!

If 4l80E was the pinnacle of auto trans development we're screwed. A quick google search will show alot of cases of leaking around the front and rear seal. First trans I've ever had to leak.

Of course the Internet is always correct. That would explain why in a fleet of them we had ONE fail - at 170k miles in a 9000 pound working van!

I've personally run one to well over 500k miles. They are an EXCELLENT trans, go to a trans shop and see what they are actually rebuilding.

OOOH, I thought the 2013's REALLY had a bad chime. After 3+ years I guess I am used to it and it does not register any more

+1 I had one in a 1993 C-3500 extended cab that could pull the world on wheels if you could hitch it up. It was equipped with a 7.4L that I ran for over 400K with zero issues with both engine or transmission pulling loads that would have killed most at the time. Prior to the 4L80E, GM transmissions were fairly mundane (save for the TH400 which was the basis for the 4L80E) and did not tow or last very well.

So you've had ONE fail out of how many 20-30? Not exactly "pinnacle" of transmissions then would it? We have fleets of 5R110W pulling 10-12k+ in shuttles all day with no failures. Would I call those a "pinnacle" of transmissions not even close. The only thing that would be close could be Corolla transmissions.. alot of poor drivers buy those things and takes quite a bit to kill one. To see what's actually failing you'd have to go to 1000's of transmission shops across the country. Is the 4l80e a bad transmission?.. No it's a good transmission that can take alot abuse.

Plenty of 4L60 and 4L80s, that's for sure. 4L80Es are pretty well known for losing reverse.

Even the fast Dodge Cummins guys know where to go when they need an auto trans that can be made to handle real power. (4R100)

Steve, I'm glad you've had miraculous results from your fleet of Chevy's. That's great.

But the fact of the matter those transmission shops will see plenty of 4L80E in there for no reverse engahment as it's relatively common issue.

Yes, BTS 4R100s have become a common swap for diesel drag trucks and tractor pulls. I know a 8 second Cummins Ram running a 4R100, and its the only trans he's had success with.

I'm a huge fan of the engineering behind this truck and I think it will represent a shift the entire industry follows. That said, why are these trucks so ugly? Why is it essential to have that blocky, oversized, industrial caricature of a grill? It reminds me of that STUPID Fox football robot, and look at one of the first pictures of him that I found...

Silverado is little better and RAM actually has the nicer looking truck on the market right now.

Ranger? Aluminum Ranger? Diesel Aluminum Ranger? Oh, just an gaudy looking F150.

It looks okay i guess. I'm not that impressed. I really like the aluminum use, that takes guts and big bucks to setup.

I think the ram now looks the best, and will have that nice diesel option. If Ram could cut 700 lbs too, that would be some awesome MPG.

It reminds me a lot of the RAM from the front and even from the side, except for the weird tail light and window curve. It's a shame they don't make the window bottoms straight across.

An uncle of mine had a 700R4 fail at 400K miles, so all of the 700R4s and GM transmissions are bad! It doesn't matter that it had a line leaking, he lent the truck out and someone ran it dry and dumped motor oil in the transmission ... it's a bad transmission, of course.

The cab exterior is a pretty good ripoff of RAM

+1

All the trucks now are $50-80k cowboy cadillacs. Even if you walk in looking for a basic work truck they look at you funny. Work??? Nobody uses trucks for work anymore.

Not all of them. Tundra is wicked old in tooth, but when I priced replacement on mine it's about $34k, for essentially a step up from base, small V8, 4x4 and four doors. Probably $30k if you step down to V6/RWD/RC (but that's a SWAG).

Now if you must have leather, DVD player and an LCD in the dash... Looking at the dealership I use I'm seeing plenty in the low 30's for four door trucks:

F150: $35k and going up: http://www.grapponeford.com/new-inventor...rice%20asc&

Tundra: $30k and going up: http://www.grapponetoyota.com/new-invent...rice%20asc&

Unfortunately this dealership doesn't do regular cab it seems; dropping the F150 to Super Cab it gets down to $30k. I'd look at other dealerships but advertised price isn't what decent negotiators pay, so take it as you will. I took a look at Bank's Chevrolet, the MSRP on the 4.3/RWD/RC work truck was like $31k but there is an online price for one at $27k.

RAM has the hemi quad cab 4x4 6spd for $29k including shipping up here. That's with a $8500 rebate.
Strangely the V6 pentastar with the 8spd trans is actually more, I guess becuase they charge alot for the 8spd trans with the hemi.
Not long ago a 4.7 V8 quad 4x4 was $27k but the 4.7 is gone now.
Anyways if I ever get a new truck, it will only be when they are on sale. The msrp's on these seem to be priced with rebates in mind.

My idea of a truck is a regular cab, 8ft bed, 2wd with a couple of options, like power windows and such. Chevy's optioned like this go for around $22kish.

The 2wd part blows the dealers mind, but the reality is when you live in southern NE you don't get much snow and 4wd is pretty pointless if you don't off road, and I don't ever.

Typically they have to be special ordered.

Who pays retail for a pickup? Certainly not us.

One time we got a new p/u with 200 miles that had TWO pages of window sticker, it listed just short of 50k.

We got it for about half that, drove it 160k miles and sold it for the mid teens!

Very cost effective in a biz where you depreciate the vehicle...
