Wait for a CT sale, or, for a far better option, check your local Imperial Oil distributor. You'll probably have to buy a case of 12 at a minimum, but it won't be anywhere near $17 a litre.

Are distributors allowed to sell direct to consumers?

I found M1 ESP 5w40 on sale for $9.20 a litre is that just as good as 5w30? On the mobile 1 website the 5w30 has a ton more factory approvals.

What VW specification does your engine require?

Supposed to be VW 502 - 5w40. On the Mobil website the 5w30 is approved but not the 5w40. I wonder what the difference is?

Yes, I buy there all the time for personal use. They just won't let you buy like 5 litres at a time. You'll have to purchase by whatever the case lot is. For this product, I believe it's a 6 pack of one litre bottles, now that I think of it, aside from the giant dealership sized drum.

When I look at Mobil's website, I see that neither the 5W-30 ESP nor the 5W-40 ESP is 502 approved, do you see otherwise?

If it were me I'd use an oil that carries the approval your manufacturer specifies such as M1 0W-40, or another manufacturer such as Castrol or whatever. But that's just me.

Explain again why you wish to deviate from what the manufacturer's specification? I've forgotten.

I know what you are saying, but it does not have 502 approval. But on the 504 being stringent, I'll give you that.

So what's the problem wi

Hey kschachn,

Quattro Pete recommended the best motor oil for my direct injected engine is something w/ low Saps and low NOACK. Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 was the example given.

The reason to go w/ a non-approved oil is in the hopes that it is even better than 502.00 spec oils since the car is no longer under warranty. Also the idea is to find the best oil that would help reduce further deposits in the intake/engine to prolong the life of the car since I just bought it at 130,000km /81,000miles. I would love to be able to drive it at least for another 100,000 km/63,000miles.

I have compiled a huge list of oils I want to run after my warranty. Based on available specs, I will run Mobil 1 ESP 5w30, unless something better comes out. Make sure to do only 5k oci's and uoa's to makes sure the TBN isn't getting too low. Not sure if you have a Pepboys near you, but they sell it or can get it quickly if it's not in stock.

Forgot to add, of the dozen or so mid-low saps oils on my list, esp 5w30 is the only one with the Porsche c30 approval along with 504/507 and mb 229.51.

I did Mobil1 5W30 ESP in both of my cars. Not confident it can do 5K OCI, UNLESS it is California where gas is much better.
If SAPS is an issue, I would go with Mid-SAPS oils such as Pentosin 5W40 or Motul X-Clean 5W40.
I will actually try Pentosin 5W40 in my Tiguan, and do UOA, so we will see how it will hold up.

I've spent hours pouring over the various posts and it seems that most ppl use either Mobile 1 0W40 or Rotella T6.

I was also wondering if Pennzoil Ultra Euro is worth the extra cost?

Are there newer SM oils that would work better for this engine?

Hello teekoh - We highly recommend our Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil with PurePlus Technology for your 2007 VW GTI. This motor oil is actually approved against the VW 502 specification (which is a high SAP gasoline oil engine specification). In addition, the PurePlus Technology motor oils that we produce are designed to keep your pistons cleaner than required by the toughest industry standard. - The Pennzoil Team

Dear Gena, please kindly ask your overlords where this Pennzoil Unobtanium can be purchased and report back to us.

It's nice that Pennzoil is on this board but their marketing and distribution departments are terrible. You can never count on their PDS info( when available) and I can't walk in to my local auto parts chain and buy the Euro spec oil. I can buy Mobil 1 0W-40 and Castrol 0W-40 locally for a great price and not online for $10-$15 more for the same 5 quarts.

The PU/PP 5w-40 is now readily available at many auto part stores around here (AZ, AAP, PB), and if you catch it on sale, it makes for a decent deal. I recently got some for a little over $3/qt. But the 5w-30 (non-L) variety that she is recommending for the OP, I have never seen anywhere. Not even online.

As happy as I was to run PUE 5w40, Amazon has since stopped carrying it, forcing me to go with another brand. It's just not worth it for me to order oil online when I can locally get M1 0w40, Castrol Edge 0w40, or Motul 8100 x-clean 5w40. There's never any wondering or guessing if they'll be in stock like Pennzoil was. So for now at least, I'm running Motul, in hopes the mid SAPS helps with intake valve deposit formations.

PUE 5w-40 has been discontinued and replaced with PPE 5w-40, which Amazon does carry, but the current pricing leaves much to be desired...

I forgot to mention that last part, and you're right about the price. I'll just keep running Motul for the 5k OCIs. I don't have an issue changing oil every 5k as opposed to VW's recommended 10k intervals.
