I am trying to find out which is thinner at very cold start up temps.- Esso 0W30 or GC 0W30. Here are the specs I found, but I do not know enough to compare them. Can anyone help? GC- Cranking- 6200@ -35 and Pumping 6000@-40 Esso MRV Viscosity P @-40 226 @ -35 112 and MRV LPT 0c @ 60000cP -46 Thanks for any help. Roger

The Esso viscosity data is listed in poise, so we'll add the extra 00's and it should make more sense.

Cold Cranking ASTM 5293
GC.....6200 @ -35C
XD-3...5900 @ -35C

Low Temperature Pumping ASTM 4684
GC.....60,000cP Max @ -40C
XD-3...22,600cP @ -40C

Castrol, with the 60,000 cP max number is simply indicating that GC 0W-30 meets the 0W grade requirement for MRV viscosity of 60,000. So it is not the actual pumping viscosity at -40C and is of little value for this comparison.

What's interesting is that Esso lists the MRV low temperature point as -46C(-51F), the lowest temp at which the oil still meets the 60,000 cP max requirement.

Both GC & XD-3 have excellent low temperature properties - I don't see an indication where one has better cold temp performance data than the other!
