Hi guys! I'm new here but I'm constantly reading all the good stuff you guys post!

So I'm looking for some help here.
I've got a 2009 Ducati Monster 1100. Bought it new with 2 miles on the clock.

All the maintence has been done to it per the manual. It currently has 1200 miles on the clock. All the oil I have ever used is Motul 300v 15-50 and a factory filter. I don't mind using motul but its pretty expensive stuff and its not a available locally so I'm considering changing to some thing else.

Here are some considerations I have taken into the equation.

Bike is air/oil cooled.
Bike has a dry clutch.
Temps in Las Vegas during the summer are over 100-110.
Spring and fall temps are 80-90
Winter temps are 40-60

What do you guys think. I was actually reading about the Rotella T6. But I'm a newbie just trying to get as much info as I can.

Thanks!

If a dry clutch forget paying more for them. Rotella t-6 shears fast, keep that in mind.
In my 106 air cooled Harley I've had good experiences with RP 20w-50,motul 10w-60,pennzoil auto 20w-50. Most 20w-50 car oils have treated e well except I've seen 2 Harley's using castrol that had mud in the top end. Switched to Amsoil and no more mud.
Look for something shear stable. Rotella conventional 15w-40 works great in my shared sump bikes and I'm gonna run it in my Harley this season, just to try it anyways.
You don't need anything JASO which will save you a few bucks. Alot of guys like the VR-1 oils in bikes but I haven't found any to try yet.

In the summer I would use Mobil 1 V-twin 20W-50 or Amsoil MCV 20W-50 motorcycle oil. You cannot do much better than those for a shear-stable oil for air-cooled motorcycle. For less cash you could consider Mobil 1 15W-50 which is not a motorcycle oil specifically, but is often used for such and since you have a dry clutch and most likely a separate gearbox oil, a motorcycle specific engine oil may not really be required, but definitely would not hurt. Redline makes some very good full syn oils that you might take a look at as well. They make a 15W-50, 20W-50, and a couple motorcycle-specific oils as well.

Might be a good idea to check and see what oil viscosity and specs are recommended/required by Ducati for this engine. Does the exhaust have a catlytic converter like BMW's?

You can pick up at Vegas warehouse:

Amsoil will work great for your bike.

Thanks guys for all the info so far. I do an oil std OCI of 6 months just because I don't ride as much. I hit hit by a car a few years back and shatters my elbow.

The gearbox and engine are a shared unit, I forgot to mention that.

My manual recommends a 15w50 for extreme high temps or 15w40 just about everything else.

I called Duacti and asked them for oil specs and all they told me was a synthetic motorcycle oil is the spec. Look in the manual for the proper viscosity.

The Rotella is readily available here for me, I have never used redline except for my gear oil in my jeep diffs.

I have not used Amsoil either. There is a warehouse here?

Thanks guys

Yes there is an Amsoil Distribution Center in LV. Sign up as a PC with me, and you can just pick it up at the LV DC.

Motul 15W-50

This oil may be an option for staying with the manufacturer's recommended viscosity. Also note, this oil is supposed to have the additives to protect your bike's gearbox, while still having lowered phosphorous and sulfur to protect the catalytic converter in the exhaust, if yours has one. And less than $10/qt delivered to your door!

I have a friend that used to race parallel twin Kawasaki's and built his own engines. He always used a certain Motul oil because he said it provided excellent protection and performance for the right price. (It may have been a semi-syn 10W-40, IIRC.) He avoided the most expensive oils because the oil would get drained after one or two races and the Motul he was using was already working so well for his purposes, and at the right price.

personally i would look at penrite gas hpr10

10/50

nice and thin for start up getting oil into the valve train which has always been importantin desmo motors

it also makes it crank easier in the cold weather when the oil is thick ,

example i was using 20/50 in my monter S4 and it was a pain to start in the cold weather and perfectly fine in the warmer weather

I now use Penrite HPR5 5/40 full synth and jaso rated and it starts no drama any time of year , but with your being oil/aircooled i would like to see the 50 for the warmer weather use

Hi JPQ,

I use Amsoil MCV 20w-50 in my 2010 DUCATI Streetfighter S which has the 1098 superbike engine (dry clutch).
I live in a similar climate here in Australia to yourself.

I run the bike pretty hard with oil/filter changed at 6000 Km OCIs, which is half of the DUCATI recommended interval.
The oil is pretty black by then.
UOAs show the wear rates are extremely low. Viscosity is still within grade at 100 C and at 40 C it has dropped to about the equivalent of a 15 weight oil.
All the boron content has been virtualy depleted by the time of the 6000 Km oil change.
It looks as though the 1098 engine uses boron but not a lot of everything else.

I have done a VOA on the Shell Advance Ultra 4 15w-50 that is recommended in the owners manual, and interestingly it has about 4.5 - 5 times the boron in it compared to the Amsoil MCV. I assume the higher boron content in the Shell oil is a product of the development work that DUCATI has done with Shell.

With the Amsoil, the big bonus is that the shift quality is absolutely outstanding.
I really cannot recommend this oil highly enough for a 6000 Km OCI.

Cheers
