hello everyone
i`m new here and i really need advice about oil

i live in egypt, in summer we have hi-temp 35-45c
i just got a new car which is 1993 fiat tipo 1.6L I.E. with 190000km
i looked in the manual and it says the recommended oil is ( 15w40 SF/CC )
i couldnt find that grade here in the market and i really want to change the oil
i can use 20w50 which is avaliable but i think it`s a little thick for the engine
i was thinking about changing to synthetic oil but i`m confused about the grade
choices are
Mobil 1 0w-40 , Total Quartz 9000 5w-40, Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40
i don`t know if these grades are suitable for hot dusty climates

help me choose an oil please

i really appreciate your help, thanx in advance

You need to worry about heat and not cold weather performance so I would try going with a 10-40. Mobil 1 High Mileage has one as does Pennzoil Platinum.

Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic has a 10-30 that would probably work also.

If you are worried about dust and such run a good oil filter like a Purolater Pure One.

So 5w-40 grade is acceptable for hi-temp without harming the engine ?

for the brand, in our market Mobile is locally bottled, Shell is imported from south-asia but Total is french made
wont total be a better choice ?

thanx everyone

5w-40 is an acceptable grade, bottom number is start up properties of the oil,at temp it's a 40 wt just like a 15w40.

Any oil readily available and of the grade recommended is ok for your vehicle.

thanks vey much

one last thing, is it ok to change from mineral to synthetic ?
my engine is in good condition, no oil burn or leaks

No worries there either.

All the oils you mention will perform excellent in your engine.
I would chose the cheapest one.

Shell is marketing oil under it's own name in EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa).

thanx everyone for the valuable information

I agree, but he's in Egypt and they probably don't have Maxlife available.

Galilio, do you have any mineral 10W-40's over there?

nob, both grades 15w40 and 10w40 isn`t avaliable here
the most popular mineral oil grades is SAE50 & 20w-50
then there is the synthetic grades from mobil, shell, BP, Total

i also looked for semi-synthetic but no luck so far

I guess in that case, the Shell Helix might be the best choice, followed by the Mobil 0W-40.

I don't know anything about the Total oil; over here we have a cereal named "Total."

I would worry more about your filtration systems in those conditions. I think any of those oils would be fine. IMHO.

dont worry about filtration i use Original Bosch Oil filter + k&n Sport air filter and i clean it on regular basis.

what do you think about BP Visco 5000 5w-40 api SL/CF fully synthetic
it`s cheaper than Mobil and Shell Oils

otherwise i`ll go with Shell Helix Ultra as recommended by u guys

thanx everyone , best regards

I would replace the K@N with a [paper] filter .
The filtration of the air for your engine is way more inportant than the brand or type of quality oil that you use
