Nothing at all wrong with blowing an air filter clean, if you do it right. People born and raised in US cities after 1970 seem to think its a cardinal sin... and to be fair to them there's not much reason to do it instead of go down to the corner Autozone and buy a new filter every few years. But those of us who grew up with farm equipment that required DAILY air filter service got very used to using a low-velocity compressed air nozzle to back-blow paper air filters in between changes.

There's the rub, doing it "right". Do you use 100 psi with a 1/8 inch nozzle and hold it 2 inches away? Maybe 4 inches away? Or maybe you need 120 PSI with a 3/16 inch nozzle and hold it 3 inches away. At some point the filter will get damaged and let in particulates.

I remember after Mt St Helens blew in 1980, the only way you could drive was by wrapping TP around your filter and changing it daily. If you didn't do that, your engine would be toast in a few short weeks.
