I am assuming that the best time to buy lawn mower in cold region is winter. However, I don't know how to go about finding out if the stores actually lower the price or just jack it up and offer the discount. Is there a place to find out how much a place like Sears, Tractor Supply, or Lowes normally sells for mowers for during normal season?

I dont know if there is a "normal" discount, each store has its own issues.

Just look around a bit, do some online research, talk to the staff at the stores.

I have a buddy that bought a nice lawn tractor at Home Depot after Christmas for a very good price.

Personally i dont believe buying one before Christmas would net you much in the way of savings, but my opinion is based on in my part of the country, we still have three more months of cold after Christmas.

Good luck with your purchase

What type of mower; Push, rider, garden tractor, etc? Pushmowers go on/off sale all the time and returns, refurbs or scratch/dents can be had from time to time. In regards to name brand lawn/garden tractors (like JD and Cub Cadet), great deals can be had in Feb/March on leftover units, prior to the new model year roll-out.

I purchased a Toro Super Recycler mower that was a return to Home Depot. End of season they had there returns out in front to the store for sale. I believe they knocked $100 off, or something like that. It looked very new. Then I purchased an Echo SRM-210. Again, a return. Looked very knew. It was half price or $100.00. I jumped on that thing like a monkey on a banana. Used it yesterday to clear about 1/3 acre of brush. These were purchased back in 2000. Not sure if they are still doing this. Sears also used to sell returned items for a discount. However, the Sears mower I purchased was not in the same league as the Toro. Purchased a returned tiller from Lowes for a discount. Then snow thrower at Home Depot that was 1/2 price end of season. Timing is everything to get these deals. I could tell these were good deals because they sold new ones that had the regular price listed, or the snow thrower had the regular price tag, just cut in half at check out.

LOL. Yeah, I'm guessing "law mower" is what they call an attorney.

It's been my experience that the good off-season buys are usually clearly marked "Reduced" or "Clearance". The stores want you to know it's a deal, so they can move the inventory.

Yeah..... a lawyer mower..... Perfect.

Sears will deal down significantly, and so will the big box stores. Don't be afraid to offer them 60 or 70 percent of the normal cost. If stuff has made it out to Sears' sidewalk, you can definitely deal them down quite a bit. I bought a $1400 rider for $850 two Summers ago at the end of the season. Places like Walmart usually sell everything they have each year so they're a wash. If you're a good talker, even Ace Hardware will knock a little off their stuff.

Here's an interesting Sears story. I once lived in a California town not too far from the Nevada border. I was in the local Sears looking at gas powered weed whackers. Salesman told me he'd sell me one if I insisted, but if I was smart, I should drive to Nevada and buy it there. Why? Nevada has more lax laws on small engine smog, and the units sold there would run better since they are allowed to burn dirtier.

Kind of makes sense. I bought a chainsaw in Cali and it ran like [censored] until I took it apart and cut off the limiters on the carb adjustment screws so I could richen it up just a little more. Made a big difference in ease of starting and power. Shoot, run synthetic 2-stroke oil and there's hardly any smoke. M1 2-stroke oil gets my vote.

I bought a new Echo 346 (31cc saw). It ran fine out of the box but I knew there was more power on tap. I removed the catalytic converter portion from the muffler, removed the restrictor caps, and re-adjusted the carb. Saw spins faster, cuts stronger and feels like it picked up noticeable power. Great little saw!

You can buy one just as good for less money at Walmart. The only decent thing on this Craftsman mower is the bag and the engine. The decks on these seem like they're made to fail after a couple years. In fairness, the Walmart specials are the same...just less expensive. The people at the website that reviewed the mower didn't even know the Craftsman had a four-stroke engine. Some sites that review stuff are about as reliable as Wikipedia. Anyone who can type can contribute. Get a Toro or a Honda and move on with your life...your mower will probably outlast you! The only caveat is that you need to buy at least the second up from the bottom and not the cheapest of these models.

Lawn Boy is a division of Toro and their mowers are good stuff; if you stay away from the lower level offerings.
Very similar design. The best ones have Honda engines.
