Didn't realize that a new data sheet was available for Havoline SM/GF-4, but here it is:

Havoline SM/GF-4 5W-20 & 5W-30 Data

Chevron has indicated that it can meet GF-4 specs with it's GRP II+ base oils, so Grp III may show up only in the 5w-20 formulation.

Is ChevronTexaco bringing back the old Formula 3 marketing term?

Thanks Blue. I'm confused about the levels of zddp, though.

I expected dramatic reduction?

Good point, Haley. The listed amounts of .094 phos & .103 zinc are still the same SL data sheet numbers.

Isn't 800 ppm phos the final negotiated limit for SM & GF-4?

Generally, Group III base oil is only used as a correction fluid when lower quality base oils are used to blend GF-4 oils. GF-4 5W-20 with GR-II+ base oil is no problem, but some oil makers may find it more economical to blend GR-I & enough GR-III to make the spec.

I dug and found some specs for Havoline's new formula 3 product, and it had a flash point of 465 degF and a TBN of 8.5. That is almost too good to be true? It is an API-SM GF-4, and surely uses the better GIII base stocks and quality additives, but with specs like that, who needs synoil?
