Just bought 2 cases of Havoline 10w30 oil today and it was SM classification. When did SM oil come out? What's the difference? nevada smith

Ouch.

No one is trying to be rude, but -- ahem -- the whole here-comes-SM thing has been discussed heavily here at BITOG. This would be one of those cases where the originator needs a respectful reminder that use of the "search" feature is highly effective in avoiding questions involving the repetitive beating of dead horses.

Anyway Havoline may prove to be the best dino oil period, and probably will post equal wear numbers of any oil. Good choice.

The reduced ZDDP levels in the SM oil has some of us a bit on edge. Time will tell if SM is a superior spec. overall.

The reduced levels of ZDDP is the big difference and some enhancement in cold cranking performance, in a nutshell.

The reason I ask this question on the m rated oil is ,I'm now running 4 stroke outboards costing 9 grand each. I'm trying to keep them together, running flat out at 6000 to 6200 against the governor. There are no standards out yet for automobile oils that I have seen running in 4 strokers. There are some oils rebadged for 4 stroke outboards . Trailer boat and Bass and Walleye had a small study which showed Pennzoil to be the best even over Yamaha's oil, the brand of motors I'm running.I switched to pennzoil at that time. The anti rust properties play a big part in marine use. Will the change in Zinc have that great effect on the motors? nevada smith

Wow, Nevada, have you checked out our boat and marine forum??

All SM oils are formulated for passenger cars and trucks, not Marine use.

I would be running a synthetic Marine Specific oil in that application!

I didn't realize you were talking Marine use.

Regular dino will be shearing very badly and may not have the TBN retention etc.

Amsoil WCT might be worth looking at, Pennzoil Marine, etc., not regular motor oil.

nevada doesn't realize there are a good thousand of us that live on this website. sad I know

this question doesn't bother me as much as "what is the best dino oil? or what is the best syn oil?"

nevada, do not fear api SM in a well formulated oil.

ZDDP loading is old school and will be replaced by more effective and eventually less costly alternatives.

SM is just a step in the RIGHT direction IMHO !

The Smartass's don't know oil analysis and that is what you need to remember before blasting.

Be careful WHO you read in earnest.
