Hey guys. Quick question. Searching through the voa boards, Seen conflicting reports on moly count. Does the sm rated havoline 5w30 dino have 80 ppm of moly or 300? Thanks for the reply

The SM GF-4 has aprox. 300 ppm of moly. 80 ppm would more likely be the SL GF-3.
Thats what I was thinking from the uoa section. One voa post ran a test which said 80 ppm, I wasn't clear if that was the sl version
It was the Synthetic Havoline with 80ish..AND, SM 5W20 Havoline has 406 ppm..
I don't think synthetic Havoline has any moly.
In my opinion, NO. It bothers me when people ask which oil has the most moly, or which oil has more moly.. Like they're going to go out and buy one oil over another simply because it has more moly.. There are soo many oils out there that use little, to no moly and produce excellent uoa's. Just look at GC.
No. No single component, regardless its concentration, makes a superior motor oil. It's the overall balance of components added to the base fluids which defines an oil's quality. Molybdenum is an excellent anti-wear agent, but it's not the only game in town. For example, oils formulated with moderate to high levels of boron would be good choices, too. And there are others. Give the oil company chemists credit for having at least a clue about their job. (Funny that when levels of ZDDP were reduced when the SM oils were released, half this site thought that was the end of the world...)
I've not really studied Havoline VOA's, plus, not too sure I would undertand them, but do they have a pretty good balance of additives? The reason I question that is because of the over-abundance of moly which to me would make it unbalanced. But I suppose you can't have too much of a good thing.
Excellent post, Ray, but unfortunately, we will have to disqualify your answer based on the grounds that you have a financial investment in a considerable quantity of low-moly motor oil.

Given that Chevron Oil Co.'s additive supplier (Oronite) is a wholly owned subsidiary, and that Chevron Oil Co. is a major world refiner of Group II, Group II+, and Group III base oil stocks, I believe it's a reasonably safe assumption that Chevron Supreme and Havoline are very balanced finished motor oils.

Interesting, I wonder why the lower moly count on sl. Anybody here know the moly count on this oil for sj?
