Have to pay to use Windows 11?

IF you have a cell phone-you zero have privacy-with or without APPS.
To a degree.

Big tech has it. In theory the only others that can access the location data would be law enforcement if you didn't opt in.

I am not going to argue if or they do or do not follow the rules. Either way, if an employer is going to require it - they should provide the phone.

If I'm out for a frisky drive on one of the fantastic back roads in my area, I power off my phone. Sometimes I turn it off just because. I'm not important enough to have it on all the time. 99% of the time I use my phone it's from home. If I'm in the car or riding my bike it's usually powered off. There is zero chance of me allowing location services just to get a discounted meal at McDonalds.

Edit: Also too, besides turning off location services at the "global level", turn off location services at the app level as well. At one time that was one of those gotchas that our tech overseers exploited.

And lastly, I worked in the tech industry. My last big project before retiring was a REAL TIME phone call tracking system for a southern hemisphere western ally. In the eyes of most I think this country is viewed in high regard. NOT! This was a MASSIVE mainframe installation that in theory could literally track and link together every phone number on the planet. Those of us who worked on that project had uneasy feelings about it because the spying this government did on their own citizens overflowed into the entire world. If people knew what was taking place behind the curtains there would be social unrest. You have absolutely NO IDEA!

It's Office 365 that my dad is talking about. He kept saying Windows 11 and then I asked him about Office 365 and that was it.
This is where I bought my lifetime license. I say “lifetime” but I know eventually it will become obsolete. When I went from an Intel Mac to Apple Silicon it broke the “lifetime” version I bought in 2014, but it still ended up being way cheaper than the subscription model.

Edit: if your Dad uses any of the cloud based features of Office 365 he won’t get them if he buys the standalone version.

Umm… are you sure her work O365 is only single authorization? My work uses O365 as well, and if you get into the settings online, you can see if additional authorizations exist with the volume license she’s got from work.

My work license includes up to 5 additional PCs on the single license, but they are all required to follow the corporate policies for O365… but I get to use it free on my desktop yet still be able to access work docs via MFA thru Authenticator.

It's possible to set conditional access per user or the entire tenant to limit activations to one device or to devices that only meet the conditional access criteria. There's a very good chance if the school is a public entity then they limit it to domain-only or one device only.

So true! Exactly!

I'm not anti-tech, but I'm amazed that anyone puts an Alexa in their home. I don't even use Siri.

In today's world it's impossible to escape this technology, but it's most certainly possible to eliminate the "low hanging fruit".

Or Onedrive storage, which is why I buy MS365 for my family. I use it for photo backup on my iPhone

Amazing how often I have had a casual conversation about something specific, only to find when I open my email, computer or phone, something pertaining to that very conversation pops-up. Far as is I know there are no devices "listening" to me. Nothing on my home network but I do have a TV and t.stat as do many. Think I am probably too boring for anyone to care but must admit to it being very disconcerting!

It's all cookies and data mining. Only way to not have it happen is to use nothing online

Theres a couple of good software packages for writing patents, but they each are expensive and require Microsoft Office which is an additiinal cost.

I use PatentEase. I never used the others but they probably are easier and faster to use

But PatentEase does not require Microsoft Office. And I have it, and am familiar with it.

I bought a disk version many moons ago. But now its available online and it appears to be free.

Windows 11 isn't priced on an annual subscription basis, but Office 365 (now called Microsoft 365) is, and it does cost $99/year, so maybe that's what he's talking about?
I was a long time user of Microsoft Office but I switched to an open source free alternative a few years ago called Libre Office. You can download it for Windows. It works with xlsx files and it has some nice features that Microsoft Office doesn’t. Also Libre Office uses much less memory and CPU and Libre Office seems faster with large complex spreadsheets when doing a recalculate of 900,000 rows.

I don’t think it’s worth paying for Microsoft Office.

LO is not MS Office, but for most home users, it is more than enough to cover their needs. I believe this was the last year I paid for O365. Will either use LO on W11 or switch to Linux/BSD full-time.
