Hastings LF393 Cut Open

Going to compare the Hastings LF393 to the ACDelco PF52 Classic equivalent that I recently cut open.

Cut open a new Hastings LF393 to have a look. LF393 has 49 pleats and weighs 10.2 oz. The ACDelco PF52 Classic equivalent has 51 pleats and weighs 9.7 oz. This Hasting filter has a thin ADBV compared to the ACDelco, but it is way more supple like silicone. The Hastings has a fully glued flat seam while the ACDelco seam, unfortunately, is just glued at the very ends of the media. I tore the ACDelco seam apart, and there was only one area that had adequate glue, and the the rest of the seam has minimal glue. I cut open two PF52 Classic filters, and they both did not have flat glued seams.

The Hastings seam is not as pretty as the ACDelco as far as looks go, but I do think a fully glued flat seam would be better than a seam that is just glued at the ends of the media. The equivalent Baldwin B35-S has the exact same specifications as the Hastings, so there was no use to spend the extra 46 cents on the Baldwin unless I wanted a red filter because LF393 and B35-S are the same filter just in different color cans.

Looks good. Just a bit ugly by the seam but that's normal. I did notice that the ADBV is softer than most nitrile ones and its thinner.

Hastings makes quality filters. The 43c extra is worth it for the snazzy red paint job. It looks cool

The good news is that the new Purolators are red, and cost less.

I was surprised at how supple the ADBV was. It's just as supple as the Wix silicone ADBV I just cut open too. The ACDelco was like hard thick rubber. If I had pulled that flat glued seam over just a tad, it would have looked better, but just as long as it performs good is all I care about.

Some more observations.

Hastings pleats are deeper than the ACDelco PF52, so I figured it had more media too, and the numbers are below.

Hastings LF393--60 x 3.75=225 Hasting specifications say 223, so I am right there on my measurements.

ACDelco PF52--46 x 4=184

^^^ Yep, just counting the number of pleats can be a little deceiving. Need to actually compare the media area like you did above.

I want to use the Hastings Filter for my Explorer but I am worried the Bypass valve is set too high at 20. I think Ford wants it at 13?

Is the Hastings filter you want to use specified for your Explorer? If so, then ignore the bypass setting as it's also dependent on the internal design of the filter.

Hastings website says LF641. Not sure what you mean by specified?

Specified means called out or recommended by Hastings for your Explorer.
