baldwin, hastings, and amsoil, i hear these are all essentially the same filter? all made by baldwin? anyone know what the exact status on this is, fron actually looking at/cutting open them all? the new baldwin "hpg" glass synthetic media is supposed to be good, do the other brands have it?

All three are made at the same plant and are all very good filters, but that's about all they have in common. I too thought that they were a all the same, but they are all made to the specifications of their company. Thus they are all slightly different. I cut open a regular baldwin and hastings and a wix. All really good filters, But I have to give the edge to Wix with the silicon ADBV. All the others use a nitrile ADBV. The Baldwin and the Amsoil do filter down to a slightly smaller micron rating than the wix.

One thing that we who cut open filters are finding out is that you need to cut open your specific filters application. Juste because Hastings makes and nice LF107, it doesn't mean that their LF393 is good too! Within a companies line of filters the build quality varies from one application to another. Only way to really tell is hack one open.

For my pf-44 I pay

3.75 for the Hastings
6.05 for the Baldwin
5.45 for the wix

For the money the hastings is a really nice filter for my applications, but the wix is an
overall better filter

The Balwing HPG is only made in a few filters applications and is simular in quality to the amsoil filter.

Well said.

I was told by the Amsoil tech line that the ADBV was better than silicone.

I was trying to find out why it looked like the standard ADBV. He said it was some type of material that was better, I can't remember it was a year ago.
I thought there was only 2 types of material.

I'm going to check back with amsoil again on this.
