Has anybody bought from Tirerack

Thanks for all the replies. I also looked into Discount Tire and they are about $50 less than Tirerack, without the tire "certificates". I don't think I will buy the certificates because if I had a problem, it may not be worth the price to ship it back to them seeing I live in Canada.

I have also purchaced many sets of tires and brakes/rotors from TireRack. TR is a good starting place even if you end up on another site the TR has a good selection of products to be compared to others. I love their review section on products.

I'm in the US, so the situation is a little different, but...

I've ordered twice from DTD and it was cheaper both times than Tire Rack, because DTD has free shipping.

My experience has been that DTD has fewer tire choices, but lower prices. At least that has been the case when I ordered.

Ordered from DTD before, and had no issues. Local tire shop mounted them up at the normal charge. No problems. Even he noted that they order online for some tires because its cheaper than the local distributor price, particularly for choices a little off the beaten path...

Great experience with Tire Rack, saved hundreds over local tire places. Good customer service and fast/cheap shipping, highly recommend.

Tire rack is the best IMO.I have ordered from them for 20+ years with no problems. Shipping is getting more expensive along with mtg. and balancing that is causing the price advantage to shrink. No one can match the broad selection of size and brands however. Many tire stores will now match Tire rack prices in my area (OH). FWIW--Oldtommy

16 years ago, before the internet was available to me, I once went to Discount Tire to purchase two tires. After I told them what I wanted, they punched around their computer and gave me a quote. I told them I could get the tires $80 cheaper by ordering them from the ad in Car and Driver. After repunching the computer, they came back with a quote that was more in line with their advertised price.

It pays to shop around and to know your prices. That is the only intelligent way you can deal with tire places.

Oh yes indeed, shop around!
I still shop around and never just go online.
I would love to stay with the local tire guys but, with the large savings from buying online, this is where I have been getting my tires and many other parts lately.

I always shop apples for apples(exact tire model)not just
"This tire vs That tire"

I like to shop by spreadsheet. I write down which tires are available in my size - the make, model, price, speed rating, treadwear rating, temp, and traction. Now I have everything in front of me to make a decision. I sometimes even list the weight of the tire; I believe heavier tires are better.

For the stuff that I buy, Tirerack's tire price is barely cheaper(i.e. as a buck or two per tire) than Discount Tire. That seems to make it a no brainer.

I've bought 4 sets of tires from Tirerack and both the installers I used were great. Just last week I had all four tires installed for < $80.

I've been buying tires and wheels from TireRack as long as they've been in business. I am completely satisfied, although their telephone sales people aren't as objective as they were a few years ago. But TR's extensive online tire information is incredible - excellent objective tests, many millions of miles (literally) of tire survey responses, and MANY owner reviews that are helpful to get an idea about how a tire performs later in its life.

TR tires bought without wheels I have installed at a local Firestone/auto service location, where I spend plenty of money on service, and have purchased one set of tires after bringing in TR's prices for the same tire. They couldn't match (TR's price was close to their cost), but we split the difference. I'm on a first-name basis with both service writers, so they know I'm a solid, returning customer, and they never charge me outrageously for mount/balance, or give me a hard time about TR purchases.

I bought a set of Blizzaks from TireRack last year. The price was good and they arrived in short order.

I chose a local installer who mounted and balanced them for $16 per tire. They tried very hard to upsell me on any service they could think of (hard to do on a six month old car), and finally tried to sell me an alignment, which I declined after waiting an extra two hours.

My experience with TireRack was great. Choose your installer carefully, however.

Yes. Yes.

Have bought one set of wheels/winter tires (General Altimax) and 3 sets of tires themselves. I have a local installer that does an excellent job. On my cars, I have to be sure that they are properly balanced and no shaking at any speed.

I think Tirerack is a very reputable company and a good one to buy from if the bottom line through them, with local M&B, is cheaper. For me personally I can always do better local.

I have a lot of tire shops around here that will match or beat any price you bring them. All you need is a print out showing the tire price plus any shipping fees. They will then either meet that total price or even beat it( the main place I use actually beats it by 5% ). Much easier to deal local if you can get it for the same price and if for less that is a no brainer to me.

As to the increased cost of M&B( if buying from TR vs local is your best option )some others have talked of if you bring tires in. WalMart for one charges the same flat fee regardless of where you got the tires( last time I checked it was approx $10 p/tire ). Chances are your local dealer also will not charge any extra if you bring the tires. Shop around so to speak and you should be able to find a place to M&B for a reasonable cost. Or, use Tirerack to find a local installer through their system and the M&B cost won't be bad.

Bottom line for me is while they are a good company and I "would" deal with them I always can do better local so it is easier for me to do that. I have dealt with them once personally years ago and it was a good experience FWIW.

I've bought from both Tire Rack and Discount Tire Direct.

Had one problem with DTD, when I bought a set of 4 tires for the Park Avenue. These tires had the narrow whitewall, and two of the tires that they sent had blemished whitewalls.

I was a little annoyed and asked them if they typically sold tires that were blemished.

Come to find out, I got the last 4 that they had on hand, and apparently two of the tires had been passed over for months/years because of the blemished whitewalls. Finally, someone had the courage to send them out, and it didn't work.

It wouldn't have been an issue if the plan was to put the whitewalls in. But these were going to be whitewall out tires.

They quickly send a pre-paid return UPS tag, and sent me two replacement tires as soon as they had them back in stock. However, it was a bit inconvenient and time consuming for me.

Many people see Tire Rack's low prices and forget about taxes, shipping, mounting, balancing, tire disposal, valve stems, availability of a local replacement tire if they suffer a blow-out, etc. I have bought from them and other on-line tire sources, but always after checking local prices too.

TireRack is good for high end tires, that your local tire guy won't stock, or will never stock. You might be better off buying through the guy at the tire place because they cut you balance and tire disposal fees where applicable. Some places I've notice price match. But on several occasions now I've notice is your better off not using TireRack. But either way I still contact them for advice and to see what tires are out there!
