In reading in another section of this forum it looked like someone thought the formulation for Amsoil ASL had changed in the past year or two. Such that the newer formulation would not thicken with use.

That has appeared to be true, as the SL/GF-3 versions were thickening up in a lot, but not all, of applications. The new SM/GF-4 versions are holding their viscosities very well for long oil changes. The change began in summer 2005, which is when the Material Safety Data Sheets were updated.

Has a different additive package as well. About 200ppm of Boron and a little moly I believe. Looks like the old M1.

I just got some gallons and quarts of ASL today. The gallons were SL rated and the quarts were SM rated. So are the gallons old(er) oil or old labels?

This thread explains it

But in short, Amsoil is frugal with their labels. If you got it direct from Amsoil then they are most likely all SM rated. They probably had left over gallon containers, so to answer you they are probably old labels.

Almost all speculation. Donald - Are you happy with the fact that the SL labels may be correct and you really do have an SL oil? Maybe the gallons don't sell as fast. Is that the oil you want? Have you contacted Amsoil about the labels? Are you convinced that the labels are old? If you contact Amsoil, ask them if the oil contains any group III. (I couldn't resist!)

Are the gallon containers ILSAC rated? If they state "GF-4", you're in, regardless what the listed API rating states. (If it only states "GF-3", you're probably still in as others pointed out.)

I had read that the newer ASL oil would not thicken up like the older ASL. My last oil change with ASL after 12K miles it had thickened up to a 40W oil. I am about to change my oil again in the same vehicle and as I said I got QTs of SM rated ASL and gallons of SL rated ASL oil. I am hoping that all the oil I just purchased would be the newer formulation and thus would not thicken.

The bottles/labels are used up after production is changed since they are ordered in large production runs. Chances are its SM but there is a possibility someone found a misplaced pallet of old production. Checking the date code will tell you for sure which it is.

Amsoil's formulation changes are 9 times out of 10 for the better. I've been very impressed with the latest Amsoil reformulations. Even the AFL, which is now a low SAPS oil, shows good results. I do wish they were a bit better about the labeling though.

The net is that the web page for ASL on the Amsoil website says SM rated oil, so I think he oil and label should specify SM rating.

The gallon containers are not labeled until they are filled in the manufacturing process, so I do not think its a big deal for them to toss out some old labels.
