Hard to locate wall studs

I have the first one (among a few others) - no good.
I guess I can also try that Max one.
How is the wall board or whatever attached?
Unless the OP picks one that's installed in an "old work box"

I heard there was some kind of an app to turn your phone into a stud finder.
No idea since the garage is finished. I thought it was using nails/screws, but since the magnet isn't picking up anything, I'm guessing it might be glued?
It's possible. I gave up on stud sensors after 3 purchases..........but maybe your best option. I can usually tell with hammer taps, but that can be a bit imprecise. Sensor, hammer tap, tiny drill bit................
I normally use a combination of stud finders, a strong magnet, AND looking where existing boxes are.
Come to think of it, when I was putting some shelves above the side garage door to the breezeway where I knew there was a header beam, I could not find a stud above it for the life of me with a magnet. There were studs (jack or short studs whatever you call 'em) - and they were not 16" OC. What they done did was just evenly space a couple more or less. It's fine, maybe HD on the structure but they definitely didn't attach the drywall to those studs = magnet useless.
Since the kitchen is on the other side of the wall, maybe the reason you cannot find studs in the area is that a window was once there, but was covered with the existing paneling and drywall.
I was mounting a shelf in a back room of my house last year, and simply could not find studs with my trusty studfinder. But the finder would alert on studs if I went much lower or up near the ceiling—just not where I wanted to install the shelf. Finally got the shelf mounted using special anchors. Then I realized that the neighboring houses, all built at the same time with similar floor plans, had a window in that spot near the corner of the house. Mine didn't. Evidently a former window opening was covered by paneling inside and aluminum siding outside, probably in the 1960s. That's why I couldn't find any studs in that spot. You might have something similar.

You want one of these. The best stud finder I've ever used and all it has is strong magnets.
So, the ProSensor MAX did locate the studs. Unfortunately, they are not 48" apart, which is what I needed for the shelves I bought, so I ended up mounting the shelves elsewhere in the garage.
