Well after 14 years of ownership, I no longer have my 2000 Acura 3.2TL

On 14Oct16, I was driving to work at ~2:15AM doing 70 mph on I-75 when all of a sudden in lane 3 there appeared a deer. At the speed I was travelling, there was no way I could avoid a collision so the inevitable occurred... BOOM!! The car was totaled, both airbags popped. The deer must have gone clear over the car because although the hood was caved in and the passenger side fender was crumpled, the windshield was untouched. I escaped unscathed and was able to limp the car home:

Thing is, I found out that I had jury duty on 17Oct16. So I hurriedly searched for a replacement vehicle and on Saturday the 15th, I bought a used 2015 Chevy Cruze LTZ RS:

I like the car so far. I already did an oil change (the OLM was at 11% and the oil looked disgusting). I have a couple cases of CAM2 dexos1 5w30 full synthetic, the specified oil for the Cruze's Ecotec 1.4 turbo that I was using in the Acura, so that worked out perfectly. I also did a transmission fluid change; the car has 46k miles. A little over 5 qts fluid came out and since I have a case of CAM2 Full Synthetic Dexron VI that I was using in the Acura, in went the same amount of fresh fluid (along with a couple ounces LG red). Both maintenance tasks were easy to do.

The car has been great so far. It's a nice improvement in gas mileage and with 18" wheels/tires, it handles nicely and the ride is comfortable. I decided to go with an "econobox" because my commute is 50 miles each way to work and it'll be a nice car to give to my daughter in two years when she gets her licence (I'll look for a replacement vehicle then).

Nice, when a deer hit my dad's Camry at 70 mph the front driver's side fender was smashed up like the hood in your picture. Headlight was toast, but the hood was unscathed and airbags didn't pop. The trooper said the if the airbags went off it probably would have been totaled. Total damage the body shop billed to the insurance company was $3500.

how much was the Cruze? Good rationale. I have a 16 and a 18 year old daughter each needing cars fairly soon so our '10 Civic will go to one and who knows what to the next.

I just hit a deer in my '16 Honda Accord while going 28MPH. Much less damage. Goes to body shop tonight.

Nice - how did the Dex VI coming out look?
Mine at 42k was so dark that I did it again 10k later ... Sure is easy to do ...

Could have gotten out of jury duty maybe under hardship. Probably wouldn't have flown with you still having to get to work.
Glad your OK

Typically hitting a deer does a significant amount of tenderizing of the venison. In NY if you get a tag or some paper you can keep the meat.

Thanks for the replies.

The ATF came out grey, it looked nasty. The d&f replaced approx. 2/3 of the fluid in the trans so it should be good to go for a while... I may do a trans d&f on an annual basis. The official d&f procedure sounded like a PITA so after my drive home, I put the car on a set of ramps, put a drain pan under the car and allowed the trans to drain overnight. Next morning, with the drained ATF at ambient temp, I carefully measured the volume drained and poured exactly the same amount of new fluid back in. Trans is shifting just fine.

Because of the Acura's age and mileage (226K) I only had liability on it so I had to buy a replacement car on my own dime. I looked at a 2011 Cruze LTZ RS that weekend but it looked like it had been to [censored] and back... twice. This one was super clean, no rattles or unusual noises and fully loaded so I probably paid more than I should have but I'm happy. I looked at a couple first gen Mazda 6s and pre-CVT Nissan Altimas but that meant they were older ('04-'07 range), had lots of miles and looked really beat. Since time was of the essence and on a limited budget, I wasn't able to look at as many cars as I would have liked but hopefully this little Cruze should serve me well for a while.

Glad you were safe. Damage didn't look too bad, but airbags are a great way to sell cars because it increases the cost of repair so much.

I wonder if someone will salvage it...

But after 15 years, lots has changed. Nice cruze, love those.

Save your VIN and check up on it in a year. Your car still looks good enough to see pavement.

Ouch...the Acura looks like it was really clean and in good shape too.

At least you were able to pick up something you like quickly. The Cruze looks like a nice car.

Same way on the Dex VI - (measure) doing mine yearly now as well. They say the filter does not get changed until the trans is rebuilt - so all the more reason for some fresh fluid from time to time ...

You can buy Hengst oil filters on eBay ... They are very good, and getting harder to find ...
(The AC Delco I bought there were also Hengst) ...

Kudos for being able to find a vehicle in a lower segment that you like. I know I'd have a really hard time doing the same. I attempted it on a few occasions and just couldn't go through with it.

Yeah, sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you just have to make do the best you can. Definitely wasn't easy, there are a lot of nice cars out there, but I'm diggin' this Cruze.

Harder to walk away from hitting a moose though.

I think the Cruze will meet your needs just fine and if you want another Honda product in a couple of years when you give it to your kid you can. Who knows you might really love the new GMs.
