A YouTube mechanic opens up a >13k mile Kia motor that had been idling nonstop for years.
Edit: It seems the forum administrators want me to add more comments on the video. Kenny (Youtuber is "Wrenching with Kenny," to provide him proper credit) surmises that the only way sludge could build up like that is if the operators ran it low on oil repeatedly. He also notes that low-tension piston rings often allow for oil consumption.
I'm reminded of the days when carburetors were in widespread use and sludgy engines were common. Engines often ran too rich, contaminating the oil. Fuel contamination has emerged once again as an issue with direct injection. I wonder if that was also a contributing factor.

That oil couldn't have been ever changed.
In 12,000 miles, there is no way any oil will leave that sludge. That engine ran out of oil multiple times; they just added some and constantly drove oxidation crazy high, leaving sludge, running out, putting some oil in, and oxidation goes up, leaving sludge.....
 
That's what he was saying in the video, something like 12k miles and idling for days at a time too. So, maybe some thousands of engine hours.
Definitely idling or just running out of oil, then adding some. Just 12,000 miles on oil won't do this. Not even close.
He could not read hours because he does not have an OBD reader that can read KIA software completely.
 
Many years ago, my brother volunteered to help his buddy's mom by changing her oil on her (relatively new at the time) Grand Am.
He worked at a full serve station as an attendant and felt comfortable doing it despite his inexperience.
He told me he broke the drain bolt loose and nothing came out. He began to doubt himself wondering if it WAS the drain bolt when a thick mud like substance began to work its way out of the drain pan. He removed the oil filter a piece at a time having to tap the chewed up base loose with a screw driver acting as a chisel.
The car was only a few years old and he believed it was its first oil change (and that engine's last) The fresh oil must have loosened up chunks of sludge which likely blocked the oil pick up and the engine locked up the following week.
She blamed my brother

Wow that's worse than that 40k Ecotec OCI someone posted on here before :poop:

I wonder what kind of OCI an algorithm OLM would suggest. Too bad there is no low oil light like many cars have now. Also, a business can write off their maintenance expenses, so there's no excuse to skimp.

Hopefully, the company's next car will be a Honda, GM, or Ford or something else with an OLM.
