He also notes that low-tension piston rings often allow for oil consumption.
I'm reminded of the days when carburetors were in widespread use and sludgy engines were common. Engines often ran too rich, contaminating the oil. Fuel contamination has emerged once again as an issue with direct injection. I wonder if that was also a contributing factor.
