Gulf Coast Filter problemI

I'm using two Gulf Coast Filter filters. One for fuel, one for oil bypass filtration. I was somewhat satisfied with the performance while I was using paper towels as I've had no fuel problems. My diesel oil is still just at tar black as ever, so if there was any benefit, it certainly wasn't visual. However, I now have purchased their paper towel in a sock, or stock filter elements.

Either I'm missing something, or these things cannot work. There is a clear and open avenue for the incoming oil to go directly to the outlet without ever going through any of the paper towel. The fancy plastic insert does not come close to fitting the paper towel core. There is a wide band of daylight between the insert and the core which will let any amount of oil leak past.

Am I missing something? I hope there are people knowledgeable about these filters who can tell me where I went wrong.

I noticed that too, and removed their plastic insert and used the paper towel holders instead.

I have also stuffed paper towels into the center tube before I installed the outer holder thinking that might be a problem...so far it hasn't been (same used oil analysis with and without).

What happens if you put a partial tp roll on the plastic insert before you put the PT roll in there?

The plastic insert is actually an element holder that takes place of the plastic paper towel holders. They are very "loose" in the core, and don't really seal like the paper towel holders (which use a cone inserted into the core).

Again, what I have done in the past is remove the element holder and used my PT holders in there place. I will see if I can get a picture of the element holder in question tonight.
