My brother and i had a pretty productive day. He and I decided to flush my engine. We used Gunk 5 minute flush and followed the directions very carfully. My brother [ a well versed shade tree mechanic] told me that we may want to take the oil pan off and clean it and inspect it for forien particles such as metal shavings. [remember my car has nearly 100,000 miles on it]

we took off the oil pan and it had a fair bit of sludge and carbon grit in it. then when my brother started to scrape the pan we noticed a socket in the pan. it was filthy and it must have been there a while it to was chalked full of baked on sludge. my brother then noticed that the pan had an aftermarket gasket on it with he said some permitex [ dont know what that is] around it. he thinks that prior to me buying the car someone had been working on it [the socket had the initials R.F. scratched on it] possibly replacing the pan because he says that the pan wasnt original either. possibly the other may have leaked or had a small hole in it ???

Anyway the car is running pretty good from what i can tell. it runs a bit cooler than usual though but not sure if thats from the flush or if i messed something up. Plus i have a bit more power as well [not neck snapping power but i can honestly tell a little differance as well as my oil pressure seems to be higher as well] My brother told me my engine was the filthiest he has ever seen

But now shes as clean as a whislte.

thought u guys would get a kick out of the socket in the oil pan.

You found the bonus RatFink socket! WE HAVE A WIENER!!!!

Your car only has under 100000 miles (I distinctly didn't remember that) and the PO was in the oil pan? New Pan? What kind of car are you writing about? My God man - I don't want to get you all stirred up - but that just ain't natural.

Gunk flush and looking for metal shavings in the pan. Hmmm.

I must ask, what oil and do you know about AutoRx?

It is not unheard of the find tools and Jewelery in engines. You also find tools laying in hard to reach spots all rusted up often.

Pablo,

Its my work [Drive back and fourth to the office in it ]car its a buick skylark 3.1. it has 99,908 miles on it. When i bought it it had 38,000 give or take some miles but yeah i bought it off of the car lot used. I didnt find any metal shaving [ my brother was the actual guy doing 90% of the work mainly i just handed him tools and said ummhmm and i see

] but did find some carbon [ or at least thats what he said it was ] and yeah its true there was a socket [not the ratchet or anything els thank god] in the bottom of the pan.

My brother said it wasnt the original oil pan definatly replaced as well as an aftermarket gasket because he has never seen a g.m with this specific gasket and there was permitex [ again i have no idea what permitex is] on it as well.

I was doing the flush because of the posts on the board also i am buying a new vehicle [no more used ones] and using my 2000 century for my new work car so if anything bad was to happen to the skylark it was no biggie.

I was using valvaline synthetic blend [ i think it is a balance of reglar and synthedic parts ?? again im just recently geting into doing my own maintainance] 5w 30 since i bought the vehicle 3 years ago i dont know what was used in it prior. I used only fram sure grip oil filters because thats what was recomended to me by the quick lube places [ side note i have sworn off them 10 minute oil joints because they didnt tighten down my hood correctly and it flew up and smashed my windshied but seeing how im a police officer they decided to fix at there expence

].

I also tried to get to the oil every 3000 miles but i must be honest there were times when it went closser to 5000 miles or so.

But now that my brother [ a gear head through and through] has moved within 5 miles of me he made me swear on never leting anyone of those quick lube joits touch my car again.

i only recently since joining the forum learned that fram filters and valvoline arent the top choice because of better preforming oils and filters.

Maybe the wear particles spontaneously arranged themselves into a socket, and you are the first to witness the miracle.

The drain holes in the heads on my SHO are big enough to let a socket/shim tool, ect drop to the oil pan. I doubt the tool was in there from the previous owner dropping the pan...he was probably doing something up-top and dropped it.

If I had the pan off and dropped a tool in, I wouldn't leave it there.

Shannow you are my hero !

This is supportive of the big bang theory as the socket after initial formation and allowed to flow freely would have caused a BIG BANG !!!!!!!

Thank goodness the sludge held it in place.

Always evolving, or is that revolving,

Terry
