great places to camp

So my wife and I have been discussing vacations for awhile. And we have decided it made better financial sense to go camping, we both love camping and think it would be better for our son versus admiring man made stuff.
we usually camp pretty cloee to home.
We want to go somewhere with a little distance. Can be out of state . Where would you recommend going. Itll be in april we like to fish to. We live in southern missouri and dont mind a 6 hour or so drive. Thanks everyone.

I like the Delaware state parks. Try cape henlopen to camp at the beach.

Eastern Oklahoma has some really great spots.

My family likes Beavers Bend. Not too primitive for them. Not too developed for me. Good fly fishing. Nice cool nights for sleeping and the deer are somewhat socialized to humans. They will get close enough to eat a graham cracker dropped by my child.

Start heading east. 7.5 hours of driving will get you into the Smoky Mtns.

If you go West in the summer, Oregon, Washington, and the region east to Montana are incredible. I would not recommend the Eastern Sierra until they get a decent snow season; I was there recently and the streams are mighty dry.

Northwest Arkansas has a bunch. National forests, state parks, the Buffalo, King's, and White rivers. Tim Ernst has a hiking guidebook that covers the main attractions. Devil's Den State Park south of Fayetteville and Hawksbill Crag near Boxley and Ponca are two of my favorites.

Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois has a lot of camping, too. I hiked at a place called Garden of the Gods once, over near the KY border.

The kind of camping I really like starts around Las Vegas, NM. Southern Utah would be great that time of year, but it's a couple days away from you.

There's a spot in southern Indiana that we love. It's not very well known even here in Indiana, which makes it all the better. It's a state recreation area called Starve Hollow. Very "Minnesota-esque", with a lot of tall pines throughout the campground, and many sites with lake access right next to your campsite. It's located about 5 miles south of US 50 near the town of Vallonia, IN. Campsites run about $26-$27/night for electric. Starve Hollow State Recreation Area

Alot of great lakes in MO/AR and even OK. Which part of MO? Stockton Lake is our go to lake. We've been to table rock also which is close to Branson. Bull Shoals in AR has one of the clearest lakes we've ever seen. We're going to try to get out camping twice a month this year.
