I remember a person opined on anther forum grease shouldn't be on a 1911. Is that true?

Maybe grease is good for the summer but not the winter?

I thought about trying a thin coating of grease on the rails and locking lugs of my 1911.

The grease I have is Hoppe's.

No, grease is fine for the parts that slide, and an oil for pins and such. Guns are not like cars, they just need a bit of something.........but in really cold weather certain greases and oils can cause malfunctions.....really cold, like Alaska cold. In those condition use a cold weather oil of your choice.

Hoppes grease is fine........

CLP is fine, Ballistol is fine, motor oil is fine, vegtable oil not fine, etc. wilson combat stuff is fine: you will note, oil and grease..... https://wilsoncombat.com/accessories/cleaning-supplies/lubricants.html

Keep it lubed, the 1911 requires it........

here is a link to the US Army manual for the 1911....the lubes that are listed are obsolete......but should give you a good idea on oil\grease applications:

Even Bill Wilson’s “grease” is a thick, tacky oil.

I’ve tried grease on steel semi-auto pistols. It works, it feels smoother, but it does slow the slide down, which, depending on the pistol may, or may not, cause a problem. I’ve tried TW-25B, Brian Enos slide glide, Liqui Moly gun grease and others.

I’ve gone back to oil on 1911s. Good oil, but the fact is - guns aren’t that picky. The act of lubrication is more important than the lubricant itself. I’ve tried G96, Hoppe’s, HPL, AMSOIL, and others - and the guns run correctly. If the gun is properly lubricated, and it isn’t running correctly - that is a gun problem, not a lube problem.

I tried this product a couple years or so ago and find it sticks to the 1911 rails better than anything else I had used before. Its all I use for lube now. Previously I had used a light grease which seems to me to attract more grime. There are undoubtedly other products that are as good, its just I've found what works for me.

Been using LSA for >40 years and no issues. No disco oils here!
Are you sure you didn't mean dino rather than disco oils?

LSA is excellent for lubrication but if you're not shooting the gun for a while, petroleum based lubes are better. They don't migrate as much as LSA.

Which pistol did grease cause a problem for? Which pistol did grease not cause a problem for?

Which of the bolded ones above did you like the most?

I live in south Florida. I have used grease on guns for decades. I don’t have to worry about winter temps. A gun lubed today with grease will be perfectly lubricated 18-24 months from now due to greases staying power. Gun oil on the other hand needs reapplied monthly.

Try some grease and see if you like it.

I like Tetra, TW25B, shooters choice and Slip EWG for gun grease personally.
