Not a bad idea... about 10-12 years ago, I understood Pennzoil as being an oil with good "cleaning" properties? Is this still the case? Maybe I can run a fill of Pennz dino for about 1.5K then switch over to Gold for a bit?

I'm of the opinion that oil is oil. I prefer OEM filters but for a short run it don't matter.

I don't like PYB. The way it gets touted as the go-to oil for cleaning engines makes me think it has only detergents and no oil in it.

LOL! Tell member Gokhan that as i remember few years ago he was raving and singing praises to PYB 5W20 as the holy grail of oils

"Cleaning properties" may not be particularly relevent, since it looks like you've got free metal in your oil. "Cleaning properties" probably normally means sludge/varnish dissolution, though I suppose a bigger dose of detergents/dispersents MIGHT keep metal in suspension longer.

I took the sump off.

Twice.

It was a PITA, but I THINK I got rid of a lot of it, though since I never got my act together to semi-quantify it I can't be sure.

I THINK the problem (if it is a problem) was/is in my case compounded by a sump design that drained especially poorly, a situation you may be re-creating by using a Fumoto valve.

A filter magnet might be a good idea.

That certainly is some food for thought.. maybe I won't use the fumoto, at least not right away...
