It's been a long, long 24 hours. I've been awake since 9AM yesterday, and I just drove 500 miles. Basically, I was on my way to the Mass Effect 3 midnight release this morning, and I get a call from my mom saying that my grandfather was in the hospital. He had a bypass over 20 years ago, and he'd been having chest pains. So he drives himself to the hospital, and they admit him. My understanding is that they ran a stress test, and determined that the grafts they performed in his previous bypass were in very poor condition, and were nearly completely clogged. The doctor refuses to perform another bypass, because they are fairly sure he would not survive the operation.

He is currently undergoing an attempt at angioplasty and to use stents. But the doctor does not give him great odds, because the grafts are in such poor condition that it may cause even worse damage. So one way or the other his odds aren't good. My aunt called my mom and told her the story, and she called my dad who was out in washington state. He says he wants to go see him, so he took emergency leave, and got an immediate flight out to cleveland. At the same time, we rapid packed for 4 people, threw the stuff in the car, and then I drove 500 miles, picked my dad up from Cleveland Airport, and straight to the hospital, where I'm sitting now. I'm running on coffee. 12 hours ago I wasn't even aware of the situation. I thought I would just post about this, if you don't see me on for a while, this is what's going on.

Thanks

Nick,

Always a VERY tough thing, surely made worse because of lack of sleep and the stress of travel.

Our best thoughts and prayers to your grandfather and family in general.

My grandfather was highly blocked on a number of arteries this past summer. Did sort of the same thing. They got one taken care of and he was in great spirits soon after. He has been doing well since, so there is hope.

Keep in good spirits, keep strong, and get some rest.

All the best!

Good luck Nick. from my family to yours, our thoughts and prayers are with your grandfather and your family.

There are some real WIZARDS doing stents these days. The best ones are the guys on call 24/7 for people who come in on the wagon. Many doctors these days are concerned about their batting averages and how it relates to their malpractice rates. Others, such as the wizards I refer to, just fix people.

Nick, sorry to hear about the situation with your grandfather. I really hope things improve and I will pray for you and your family through this ordeal.

Well.... After hours of me, mom & dad (this is my dad's dad), my dad's brother and sister, and his mom, sitting in the waiting room chugging coffee, and shooting the bull the way only the rudolph family can, telling funny stories about my grandfather (he does it himself, he has no brain-mouth filter, even with the nurses and doctors, who have no sense of humor).

Doc comes out, tell us that everything went as good as it could have. The angioplasty and stents seem to be working, he has good bloodflow through the graft, and apart from minor arrythmia that was predicted, he is stable. Back at my other grandfathers house now, typing this out before I go take a nap, completely exhausted.

I'm pretty convinced that conventional treatments have no real benefit.

Ive not seen any useful info on that website.

LOL. You're one of those people who discounts scientific facts that are presented quite clearly?

For the OP, here is a fact that is very relevant about this approach:

Cardiac events: The 17 patients in the study had 49 cardiac events in the years leading up to the study, and had undergone aggressive treatment procedures. Several had multiple bypass operations. After beginning the eating plan, there were no more cardiac events in the group within a 12-year period.

There are plenty of other useful facts on that webpage. This is an area where what has become conventional wisdom has also become big business with lots of vested interests.

Here on BITOG we talk about the myth of 3000 mile oil changes. With heart disease, there is a similar status quo going on. Doctors and drug companies make a lot of money from the average American's diet. For different reasons, neither side wants to change. Same with oil changes. The consumer does not want to change, and the oil companies and mechanics don't discourage that.

Successful people think differently to the masses. Look at the housing bubble that was created. The masses need to follow blindly to create a bubble. The successful people still made money from the housing crisis. For example, all those people who were selling tips on how to make money from housing during the bubble are no longer doing so. They are all out there making money from the depressed prices.

Wish the best for you and your family.

My grandma started having Alzheimer 4 years ago and lost her ability to control her body function last year. This year while my mom went back home to visit her, she had a stroke in her sleep and pass away after 2 months in coma.

It was hard to see someone you love go when it is time, but in a way we are always glad when the time is here they leave in peace.

Nick, I'm glad everything turned out okay for now - I hope your Grandpa can stay strong for a while now....
