Good dino for short trip?

I'm looking forward for my next oil change, good deal on Quaker State conventional 5w20 3.29$ per quart. I see good report on this forum. I dont feel castrol gtx is worth the few more $$.

I think synthetic is a waste of money for short trip since its recommendedto change oil more often?


Any recomandation?

Whatever is on sale and meets the manufacturer's requirements for oil?

I'd let used oil analysis and owner's manual inform my change intervals. If you are short-tripping, pull a used oil analysis at the suggested severe service interval and find out if the oil is used up or not at that point.
 
If you're not experiencing any winter cold-start issues with 5W20 and doing 5K OCIs, QS is adequate at $3.29. I do the same with Kendall GT-1 semi syn at $3.70/quart for my 2012 Veloster, but I live in a very moderate climate.
 
Short trip would be one of the best applications for a Syn oil. It is generally thinner than its dino counterpart, has better additives to fight off build up that might occur when the engine isnt completely warmed up and resists fuel dilution better.

I do not know what your current oci is, however if all the vehicle does is short trip , I would not recommend a whole lot more than 5k oci imho. You can use Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 or Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 with the WIX filter in your signature for 8k~10k ( verified by UOA if possible ). Economically it should work out the same, while giving you a much better cold start performance and higher VI (generally). And with the latest rebates on PP, it can be had for as low as $10 for 5 qt after MIR.

+1.....fully agree with the above. Syn is the better choice for short-trippers, cold starts, and is as economical as conventional because of longer OCI's.

Also its less work for the DIY'ers

I just realized the OP is Canadian.
I've mentioned this before but the hands down, no contest best 20wt oil deal in Canada is the Toyota 0W-20 at only $5.75/L.
The 2 buck price difference vs QS will easily be compensated for by the improved fuel economy not to mention all the other lubrication benefits. A true no-brainer.
 
Severe service would normally have me thinking Synthetic all day long.

As I haven't put anything other than semi synthetic in a car for years means if i was doing short trip severe service miles I would go for a well specced Full Synthetic.

Going by some posts on here US based folks are paying under $25 a litre for a decent synthetic and want to go for dino at $15 a litre.

The only mineral/dino you see is GTX 15w40 A3/B3 at £14 for 4 litres. But I haven't owned a car that takes that spec of oil in a decade.

Trying to save $10 a year but using an inferior product makes no sense. I understand that a conventional and synthetic with same specs will perform the same when new. But they won't conti.ue to do so, espexialky under severe service.

Perhaps the cost of oil in Europe has tainted my thinking?

But is SS, Full Synthetic all day long.

Depends on your OCI. Quaker State conventional 5w20 will run wonderfully, but I wouldn't run it to 15k miles.
 
I went to canadian tire today, I hesitate a bit, I saw motomaster synthetic on sale, but a grabed a jug of castrol gtx 5w30.

5w20 would be good for easy normal driving I would think for economy, but to my driving style, I wanted to go back to 5w30, and castrol gtx hold up pretty well in high rpm's. Ichange my oil every 5k km or 3k miles. Sometimes a bit before that if I have the chance to do it, so syns would be awaste in my case.

I do believe in clean fresh oil, I dont really like keeping any oil more than 5k or 7k km. My opinion.
