Pretty shortly Im going to do another pan drop on my Regal, and just want a consensus from you guys.

It has the 4T65E-HD trans, and I had a pan drop/filter/fluid change at 39k miles and Im at 45k now and want to put in synthetic ATF. People say stay away from synthetic ATF, blah blah. In one ear out the other.

My local choices seem to be Mobil 1 ATF and Amsoil ATF. Is it safe to assume the Amsoil ATF will be the better product for me? And how many quarts will I generally get from a pan drop? I had the first one done (paid 60$).

Thanks

98Regal: In my Century (which I think has the same transmission model) I dropped the pan and was able to replace 8 qts of the 10 qt. system. I had only purchased 5 qts. of Mobil 1 ATF so I had to top it off with 3 qts of dino (Supertech). So my system now has 50/50 syn/dino blend with 80% of the fluid replaced. It shifts very smoothly and is running perfectly so I am very happy with the results. Have at least 8 qts. of whatever fluid you decide to use on hand. Good Luck
PS: My original fluid looked and smelled so good at the 36K change that I'll probably go to 100K on this mixture.

THanks for your post.

My pan was super clean and had no shavings or excess "junk" in it at 39k miles. Very happy with that. Cant wait to try out the Amsoil ATF or Mobil 1, whichever I decide.

My trans is the heavy duty version of the 4T65E, due to the Supercharged 3800 under the hood. Its not stock either, and it sees some track abuse. A good ATF is needed for my duties

And, of course speak to Molakule about suitable oil for your next change. From all reports his formulations are doing some great stuff.

Either of your local ATF choices are good.
Usually around half of the total transmission capacity is in the pan. The other half is in the TC, cooler, and transmission plumbing.

Get a pela extractor or a drainplug kit. Dropping the pan regularly can get annoying.

Even with a synthetic ATF, you should still pick a reasonable ATF exchange interval especially if you're only removing 1/3-2/3's of the fluid.
