My friend has gone over 10,000 miles using AMSOIL XL 7500 10W30 in his 14 years old VW that calls for 20W50 in summer months.

He drives hard and his close ratio transmission makes the engine work harder. RPM is at 3500 @60 miles in fifth gear. During normal ~80 miles/hour trips his RPM is above 4500!

Last year he asked if there is an oil that can last the entire year (15,000 -20,000 KM) I told him to try AMSOIL 10W40. Instead of buying the real synthetic AMSOIL, he gets the cheaper group III XL 7500.

I am not sure if there has been any harm done to his engine by running it for such a long time.

I am sending a sample to Black stone, the result will be interesting. I think the TBN should read close to zero!

WOW , I think he made a big mistake ! The Amsoil 3000 ?? The one made dor diesels could last that long ..but the 7500...heck the name itself impies that 7500 is that max he should run it

There a lot of that don't know the limits on the oil they use. Hmmm...Would agree a diesel rated synthetic would be the way to go...a cushion of protection.

It was the AMSOIL dealer's mistake. This guy didnt know anything about oil, the sales man told him that 10W40 is not needed and XL7500 is the way to go. He was charged $10/L Ca$

and surprisingly he only had XL7500 in stock.

Kickster - that's a shame. It's really sad that those idiots are allowed to sell who haven't even read the Amsoil materials provided, let alone become T-1 Certified Amsoil dealer(a study and must pass test). Next time lead these guys to the one of the three sponsors here, we won't steer them down some stupid path....and we all have 100% of what Amsoil carries. That dealer was full of %^&$ !

I still like Amsoil synthetic and lot of fun poking at it's marketing but just judge the quality of a oil it is. Hmmm...I used the Amsoil cause it gives me excellent results and feel no issue to it's cost. I would think someone who believes in Redline would do the same...he pays in what he believes in...

@mamala

I dont think anyone is blaming AMSOIL here!

My beef is with the dealer that sold him the oil not AMSOIL, however, the main point of this discussion is to find out if XL7500 has done any damage.

I think Bunch of people will be interested to see the results (including myself)

The UOA will tell the tale but there are more than a few who run dino oils that long all the time. Fear not - Amsoil is better than average - all will be well.

It will probably be fine. I hope he is going to do an oil analysis? I ran the xl7500 5w20 in my wifes ford focus for 6k some odd miles and the oil could have easily gone quite a bit longer (who knows 8-9k even though I wouldnt and its not recommended) and this was after my first switch from the valvoline quick change crap to semi synthetic.

The 5W-20 and 5w30 versions of this oil will go 10,000 mi in a Honda.

I dont really see why the 10w30 would not go 10,000 mostly highway miles in a Water Cooled VW if it is in good running condition. ie good ring seal, injectors, filtration, and no coolant leaks.

I know for a fact the XL-7500 10w30 will go 15,000 mi in a 1996 Caprice L99 4.3L (265 cid) V-8 used for escort duty.
